It's the same size as a nickel but much thinner. Any guesses? I just ran it under water and rubbed gently.

Could be a Shield or a V. It is so toasty that any value is gone. I would try your favorite cleaning method to try to get something recognizable. My first 2 cent coin looked like that and it took a few rounds of lemon and salt to bring out some details on one side the other side remained toasty, but at least I was able to positive ID.

In that state I'd go ahead and scrub the heck out of it until I could get some detail to at least ID the item. What have you got to loose?

Depending on what it is made out of, and where you were hunting, it looks like it may be the "knockout" from an electrical panel.
