I am primarily a coinshooter and relic hunter.

I would like to branch out into the realm of beach and water detecting. As I live inland I would be searching fresh water lakes, perhaps the occasional use on the West Coast. I would likely use it on the beach area, wading and perhaps shallow snorkelling.

I would like to get input from other users as to what type of machine they use...Thank you in advance.

If fresh water is where you'll mainly be seaching I'd not go with a PI machine. They shine at salt water beaches due to the ability to work well in salt/black sand. Pinpointing is not as important at the beach as you use a long handle scoop.

If your land machine is hip mountable, you can use it for wading by wearing it around your neck. But for best use in case it gets wet, a strickly water detector is best. Fisher has the 1280 which is built like a tank and only has three controls, very easy to use, has a lifetime warranty. The CZ20 was discontimued this year but a great detector for fresh and salt.

Tesoro makes the Tiger Shark and it is a great machine and not costly. Coils are changable too. Lifetime Warranty also and I use this one too.

Minelab makes the Excalibur 1000 which is costly but a very hot machine and a lot of the guys here swear by their use. I dive with mine in fresh and salt water. It is a deep machine and would be good for snorkling. You might want to invest in a Hookah air supply system since you lungs will not keep you under for more than a minute. It is easier to wade out to neck deep and use a long handle scoop.

Whites makes a good machine in the BeachHunter II. You can hip mount it and it has 3 different tones. No lifetime warranty, but it's under $600.00 bucks as is the fisher 1280 and Tesoro Tiger Shark.

Sandman is a good authority on detector choices having owned and used a lot of different brands, his advice is well worth listening to. I use the Excalibur as my water machine and have always been happy with its performance. For a site for reviews on detectors try www.detectorreviews.net on that site there are reports good and bad for different machines. good luck, what ever you finish up with buy a quality machine from a reputable manufacturer not some obscure oriental piece of rubbish.
