This is my first post. Please bear with me. I found this item on the Battle of Greensprings area, the British called it, the Battle of Jamestown Ford. Along with many American leadballs. Also a few British buttons. I have not cleaned it throughly yet. A crown with a pommel on top. Under the crown is some kind of flower. To the right is a unicorn with his horn bent, and broken legs. I'm sure there was a Lion on the left. You can see the broken edge where it was. Also the bottom shows where something had broke off. On the back one curved piece like and old buckle. Because of the green patina I believe it's made of copper, not sure though.

Well the battle of Greensprings,(Jamestown Ford,) was fought in July of 1781. This piece was in or around the british line. History has seemed to forgot this fight for some reason, even though some of the wars big stars were involed. Lord Cornwallace and Lafayette to name a couple. Some of the buttons I have found came from the 27th and 33rd foot. Would really like to know if this piece came from a single unit or was maybe a common buckle or badge that everyone had?

Interesting. Can you add pictures of the buttons to this thread?

Here's a badge for the Yorkshire Dragoons. Similar design without the rampant animal.

Queens_Own_Yorkshire_Dragoons_Badge.jpg

This unit was not formed until 1794, but as Cru said earlier, your badge could be a non-issued, personal item. Perhaps an early version of the dragoon badge? I can only speculate... :dontknow:

P.S. Could the animal on your badge be a bear?

Hey guys thanks for all the info. The buttons I have loaned to a friend at Coloinal Williamsburg to clean and do alittle study on them. I do have some backs of really nice 2 piece ones I'll post later. Also I have read that the 33rd were acting as Lord Cornwallace's personal body guard at this time. Would love to find a item personally connected to him!!! Again Thanks for the help, like I said history has left little about this battle in the books.

Well it's as simple as a quick email to find out what the 33rd used for a hat badge. The belt plate was like the buttons, just the number 33. Below is a soldier from the 33rd, but hard to tell. Below him is one from the 21st to give an idea of what was worn on their head as far as the over all construction is concerned.

Well every Brit. on the forum can agree but unless these two things are the same I don't think you're quite there yet.

I would like to see a clear shot of the lower part though.

You could count if we were doing something like planting flowers. But sadly we're not.
