Some of you people are missing the point, I don't care what they call certain objects like "Civ" or "roundness";so what if we seem a little weird to them. As we are asking permission to hunt they will see that we are not like that. I also hope most of you don't jump off the side of trees and act like a damn monkey when you find something good [[in plain sight of people.]] I hope that I'm wrong, but this show can't be good for us or our awesome hobby.

I just watched two episodes of Diggers. It was alright. The problem is, the value of the items are insanely inflated. People are going to get the wrong idea.

You sure got that right! I want to know where you can get $5 for a flat toothpaste tube and I don't think those rifle cartridges were .38 specials!! ;D The part that chaffed me was the lame jargon that had to have been created for the show. "Oh, King, look! I have 'roundness'".
"Gee, Goober, I think I have some 'juicy civ!'" Umm, I don't think so. Are there really people in Montana that talk like that?

I'll probably watch another program, but, it is going to have to get a little better and a lot less lame.
Yes those prices were inflated..... And the jargon was really bad ...... But i think that is something the writers in the show made up for them to use............. For i have some of there videos from a few years back...................... And none of those stupid words like roundness and other stupid words they used....... Were in there old videos but then some TV producer or writer were not telling them what to say.............

In all fairness to the guys detecting on the show, they've been using those terms well before the show was being developed. If you watch some of the older Anaconda detecting videos, they said the same stuff and acted the same way. If I could get 5 bucks a toothpaste tube and a buck for each shell casing, I'd be loaded.

Well I watched the show on Nat. Geo. and it wasn't is bad as some made it out to be.
The ignorant reality show kind of stuff and all; but that is what sells today.

Something the archies dont seem to understand, the areas they hunt on the show are private property or they are asked by the society or club entrusted to hold the land. So how is this looting?

<snip>Am I the only one who has spent many days getting exercise and digging only can slaw?
I had a pretty good day today for here.
Found 2 dimes, 6 pennys, 2 tokens and a little silver shoe.
All modern. I would rate that a 7 as far as a days hunt.
Once in awhile a real goody comes up.
My best is a thick gold bracelet and a diamond ring.
Left the rest of the corpse there.
Just kidding.

Grey

No, Grey, you are not alone. I am in the same boat with you. I read about someone that has found 750+ rings in a year and I look in my box of finds and only see 16 in a year and 4 months.......and I was thinking one a month was doing really good!! Boy, was I wrong. But, did I have fun, YOU BETCHA! And I'll keep doing it. It is pretty good excercise and Lord knows I need it!!

Most newcomers will turn into a pain in the butt as they would only be interested in a profit.
Sandman said it all......... Like i said it will not be good for us............ It will only be good for the dealers...........
I agree with both of u guys .

well if there is a market for 5 dollar toothpaste tubes maybe they will toss the good stuff back. :laughing7:

I got interested in this hobby by watching a tv show about detecting. It was about 5 years ago and the show was about detecting the treasure coast. It was "Best Places to find cash and treasures." I thought it would be neat to try and the rest was history. Yes as a noobie I'm sure I was a pain to some, I probably still am! But we all have to start somewhere and we just need to be patient to anyone who shows an interest...after all, we know what a great hobby this is!!

It's not the newbies that are the issue, it is the type of newbie, the reason many of the shows that are hot right now are hot, is the get rich quick mind set. One episode of Storage Wars had a guy who quit his job(he may have become a regular I only watched on Netflix) and brought all his money to an auction. It is the not thought out "I can do this I saw it on TV" attitude that too many will have, and in the process bring havoc to the sites, integrity, joy, and availability of this hobby. There will be many like you who come to it with the right attitude as well, but I fear they will be just as affected by the poor press of the others.

That is the type I have been referring. The cut throat attitude of a I wont to get rich no matter if I am digging up George Washington himself attitude. NO morals or ethics. They are there and these types of newbies will ruin your area and others just as quick as they can. We cannot stop this other than to put the word out. Just keep an eye out

I saw that show I didnt think it was any worse then that haky whites commercial "i started finding the good stuff right away" and "my wife is really proud of the wieght i've lost".Didnt show him digging up a pulltab or filling in his hole. looks to me they were on private property with owners permission, and when they searched the public beach they didnt find anythig to jump up and down about. Yes I think we should help these newbies so they will know how best to dig, and I think the get rich quick guys will get out quick when they see how much work this hobby is. Don.

Can't wait for people to start trying to recoup some of their money because they didn't find a buried treasure chest their first few times out. We'll all have as many detectors as we can on Ebay soon enough.

What i want to know is where do i find people to buy my pennys at for $40.00 each? :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead:

Same folks that buy the squashed toothpaste tubes for $5! They probably got $50 for that bent up spoon!!

I just know the Archies are going to use this program against detectorist everywhere because we are thier competion. The clad coin you pick up today will in fact be tomorrows artifact to them in the future. How dumb is that?

Sandman:

This is already happening, at least in California. I researched a picnic area that started being used in the early 40's, and found that it is on land that is now owned by a timber company. I called the operations manager, introduced myself and asked for permission to metal detect. His reply was something similar to "God, NO! The state would have my hide if they new I gave you permission to remove relics". I explained that I was looking for coins that had been dropped by picnic goers. His reply was that it doesn't matter...anything that has been in the ground for 40 years is considered a relic.

So, zinc pennies might still be up for grabs, but don't you dare get caught with a dug 1972 penny.

That is truly ridiculous. Of course, one only has to consider your location. I think they allow you to openly carry weapons, also......as long as you don't carry any bullets. Besides, if your soil is anything like that around here, the zincolns will long be dust by the time the archies get to them. I have a couple of hundred that the bank won't take, even though they are perfectly identifiable as a pennies. However, if they kick out from their coin counter, they won't take them. So, I will either try to spend them or "seed" an area in a local park.

(before the flames start, j/k about the park)

Sign of the times: What will happen, will MD's be outlawed by special interest groups or will Citys make up a MD Search Site Fee? Will ebay get flooded with newer MD's due to some people not hitting it rich fast?
I hope we all can stick together so we can keep our excitement of our hobby alive.
I still think with better MD's we will be seeing a lot of great stuff being brought in on display here
I got the faith brother!

Maybe we can use MDs to identify Terminators?
Thats why CA can ban them?

We saw a small uptick in sales and inquirys from the show. Several were oldtimers getting interested again and looking to upgrade equipment.

I suspect that the detecting clubs will also see an uptick in visitors to their meetings.
