I don't think there is anything to really worry about, I would hope that 99% of the people who watch these shows have the common sense to know that they are imbellishing quite a bit about the value of the items. The other 1% will find out very quickly that they are not going to get rich quick. Personally I have seen old tools and traps like they dug in Alaska go for $1.00 in undug condition at farm sales. The auctioneers usually have to bundle them all together to even get that for them.

I thought the shows were entertaining but I don't think there is much chance of someone quitting their job to try digging relics for a living (although I am sure a couple will). I am sure there are going to be a few isolated incidents where someone gets in trouble for trespassing because of these shows but I have read several stories over the past few years about it happening without the person watching a show about it. I really doubt that there is going to be a rush on metal detectors though.

Watched a guy and his son yesterday with a bounty hunter a few houses down from my sister in laws. Dug a hundred holes in his yard with the biggest shovel he could find. More interested in what they were finding instead of cover holes back up. As long as he stays in his yard

Bluehunter1973: Some of our members should email the National Geographic Diggers Show and ask them make mention of having good manners and be conservaitve & respectful of the land by returning the dig area back to it's natural form.
I am sure the show edits a lot of digging that does not produce results, they make it look like every target is a good one. This may spoil the viewer as "easy Pickins", WE know it takes time, knowledge & patience. Many are right, mabey later we will see a surplus of "Used MD's"... Member "Charlie P. Hit the nail on the head, if "Newbees" were to do testing in their own back yard, I'm sure they would NOT trash their own yard! I think we might get some good member out of the %.., Sandman, You are right too. We shall see.

No wonder I haven't seen any "Used" Whites Goldmaster GMT's for sale on ebay this week!
(I used to see 4 to 5 each week, now that I bought one last week none are there.) Hummm

yea it would be great to see used stuff for sale and I agree with you guys. These people are going to mishandle the equiptment try and then try and sell it for what they paid for it or more. Their manners no matter how much we try and teach only maybe 20% will actually be a great addition to the hobby. We live in a society of big A-holes who dont give a crap about nobody but themselves. Our government is corrupt are police are dirty and our people are overworked over taxed and burdened with paying for the third world countries. They only care about making money for their use no matter what. I see their point but I dont think any of this has a silver lining. The more emails are complaints we give to these production companies the more RICK Flares of American artificat recoveries (What a waste of Oxygen) we will get. Gonna have to start an Occupy T-net cause.

Like an early post pointed out expect to see a lot of detectors on ebay after they find out that a rusted auger isn't really worth $2000.
the new show is dumb and some people will believe we have dynamite in our backpacks etc.
i did see another show with 2 guys a couple weeks ago but i can't remember the name or channel sadly, the show represented our hobby much better than
that Savage guys show. IMO

My husband and I just joined this group this past week. We didn't even know there was a show until I read about them here. We are boaters and love the outdoors thus the reason for us to start up. I will try not to ask too many questions, I am actually learning alot by being silent and reading posts. HH (yep I learned that one on here..:)

I think everyone should do what they've always done on this site, share and be helpful when they can be. Most people aren't going to take up this hobby and stick with it unless it's simply in their blood to pursue this type of thing. Others might give it a go, but if it's not in their blood they won't be active in the hobby or active on this site very long.

I am new to this hobby, and I had no idea about the shows. I still have never seen one. I just always wanted a metal detector since I was a kid. I did my research, and learned the code of ethics. I always try to dig a clean plug and fill my holes. Most the newbies on here seem to just wanna know where they can go so they are not causing a problem. I would never ask where someones "honey hole" is. I don't see the problem with throwing a newbie a bone here and there. I have only been on here a couple months, but I got alot of info from you guys in just a couple posts. I also read old posts that have been filled with great info. If you wanna help cool, if not no problem.

Wow, I guess ill have to add this little quote for those of you who cant read "My thread states new members because of tv shows. If you are new because of other reasons then the thread does not pertain to you". So for those who respond to not seeing a tv show and then joining now you wont be confused and reply with half ass remarks. Yes it is my choice of if I want to help for those of who I do I hope it helps and for those I dont then maybe the remarks you make can hurt getting answers to future problems. For the newbies who have joined because they like the hobby. "Welcome".

Adding a quote for those of us who can't read. How are we gonna read it if we are illiterate? All I did was write an opinion on a forum, no need to get angry. The only thing that is confusing me is your lack of punctuation.

There's two sides to new people coming in to the hobby. It's a small group that doesn't have a very big say when laws are being changed. With a larger audience you have more people fighting for your rights. If not becoming involved with the hobby. By coming to this site they can see another side to the controversy and hopefully help you out with their voice. It's not always bad to get publicity, the average person can watch and dislike it. It's a oneness that, do some research . Find out what's really involved that are going to be able to to represent you when you need it. Whether they participate in the hobby and not. The people that go out of their way to come to an metal detecting site are the ones that are willing to get involved.

Re: "New hobbyist to the new tv show?"... I did not know if this was for comment/oppinions on "pro or con" by members or for "Newbies" to offer help and to welcome. Sorry if my comment was not for your thread as you wished. Thank you.

I am fairly new to the hobby. have an old radio shack special from when I was a kid. took my doughter out with it and found a old rail road spike and some fish hooks. been looking at learning more and learning more about the history around us. just got a garrett Ace 150 and looking to where I can really do some hunting around my town. and every where else I can hunt and have fun. I really think some show can really hurt the hobby "Americam Hunters" for one... but I like "Metorite Men". the hobby to me should be for fun and history. as I would be doing it with family we look to learn what and who was in the area. if I am looking at things wrong or some one would like to point someone new in the right direction thanks for the help...

Well I came back to this thread to see if anyone noticed a difference between the shows and any issues with new people. I only noticed a couple here and there. One newbie dug up a national battle field. I see a few detectors for sale of course not very cheap. Did my civic duty and helped a few get started. Anyone else have any issues or notice anything?

Hello everyone, I am one of the newbs sucked in by seeing my first two episodes of DIGGERS last week. I have ALWAYS been a sucker for archaeology, studied it a bit in college, and the idea of finding old stuff just rings every bell for me. Not interested in the $$$, though finding a gold chest would be nice, I am more into the history I might find.

I went out for the first time yesterday with the Ace 350 I bought the day before that, and explored a stone slave wall that's still standing on the hill above where my mother's house is. VERY rocky, and it started to rain, so I only lasted a couple hours before heading home, but I had a blast and am itching to go back out again. Found several cases of empty steel beer cans from the 60's and three shotgun shells from the 1930's.

The Shotgun shells, though worthless, are priceless to me as I know the man who most likely shot them as a teenager in the mid 30's when the area was just farms and forests.

Whether I last in the hobby or not I can't say, I'm obsessive compulsive about hobbies and tend to jump from one to another every 6 months or so.

With an amateur archaeology background I would like to think I am respectful of the history I am potentially disturbing, and hope to be a good example to others. I've got lots of questions and comments, but will try and ask them in the correct forums. I will do a formal introduction of myself in a moment, but since I am the poster boy of what this topic was about I figured I should jump in here and say howdy.

A tv show induced newbie as well as an archie.... I've got a feeling I'm not gonna win new member of the month. :)

I also started this hobby because of a tv show, I'm not ashamed to say it but for me the value in the finds has never been about the money its been about the story whenever i dig up a coin my first thought has never been i wonder what this is worth its always i wonder how this got here. Who would have dropped this item and what were they doing? I have found items and researched them out to know the history of the item. I guess the show just gave me the idea to md without the values the show seems to try to instill.Heck i knew without even having to research that the finds he was selling where WAAY out of line with the actual value of the item. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure that much out. Sure there will be a few people out there with the wrong idea but i suspect those people have already been weeded out within the first 2 weeks after the show aired!

I have been in this hobby since the early 70's and enjoyed every minute of it. I am not in this for the money either and aren't much interested in the history of the item once it is out of the ground. The only thing I have against Archies is their need to close all lands to metal detecting even though no digs are ever going to be planned.

I totally agree this whole idea of closing off grounds to mding because "someday someone might" is ridiculous. Do they really think people didn't go through the sites that they are digging up today and pluck relics 100's if not 1000's of years before them?
