Hi all,
these are my favorite finds, I believe there was a prolific local counterfeiter, out of 18 GII HPs I've recovered, 14 are period fakes. These two came from within a couple feet of each other.
Haven't had these analyzed for metallic comp yet, but weight of the first one is spot on.
Best digs everyone :)

Man, those are killer finds. It'd be interesting to see if any of those large numbers of counterfeits shared a common die...

Cheers,

Buck

I think I read somewhere, that back in those days, there were more fakes than genuine coin, that's another whole realm of categorizing finds for sure, and yes they are great finds!

I would guess probably not since they are cast. :) White/grey metal counterfeits are always cast (at least it seems), and that's the reason most collectors are not too interested in them.

Or you could mean cast from a counterfeit coin, which is a very interesting thought. Now if you had a cast example from a really crude hand cut die counterfeit that would spark some interest.

those are interesting for sure...now a die would rock as IP says...

Very cool! Congrats!

Those are cool for sure, and I don't have any like, but I would not be able to place them above your tree coins, as favorites. To each his own.

To IH yes there was a point where more than half the circulating coppers were counterfeits.

Thanks all, as far as my 'favorite finds' seems the most recents are always favorites..

I dug the nicer example first, only saw the obverse, and quickly wrapped and packed it away thinking I had a Halfcrown or some other GII Silver :hello2:

My personal theory is that most of the fakes I find come from a single family who were passing casting knowledge thru the generations.
Lots of casting occurred in the area, longline jigs & netweights by the thousands, and many 'halfbars' of raw casting alloy found, "hey, we got some leftover metal in the pot, why not try a coin?'
Most of the finds are obvious discards, certainly not passable. (as in #2 above, and the example shown below).
These recent finds are a distinctly different alloy from any previously found, visually and audiologically (izzat a word?)
If not for the light weight of the metal, I would have guessed almost pure lead strictly from appearance, (saltwater lead patinas very different from ground dug, almost unchanged by time, it just turns dark)
These will eventually get XRF analysis, I gotta get a dozen together to submit.
Varieties run from the most common GII HPs, through early Large Cents, (inc. a DB that weighs 18 grams:laughing7:) a Bust Quarter with hand cut reeding, and a very detailed impression on a small piece of lead sheet.

Been short on time for writing posts, and haven't recovered anything exceptional.
So, on with the quest. hopefully next time you hear from me I'll be posting my 8 Escudo.
(I got to handle some a while back, an aquaintance who has a coin/metal/junk shop bought a collection that had 5 hammered Spanish golds from a 'recent widow', claims he paid around spot for them. makes me rather hope they are fakes. Making a profit is one thing, OK, I'm not gonna preach about what's honorable. what goes around comes around)

Best wishes and HH everyone, Herbie :occasion14:

Hi mate !

we also have many counterfeit coins in ancient times .... many are from the 19th century ... but for me some are more valued than the official ones.

Nice to hear from you :hello:
Indeed, the copies are scarcer and more personal finds. Best wishes and HH my friend !!

Rick the Notre Dame website is a really good research tool, and days of interesting historic reading if you are into that kind of thing. (like me) :laughing7:

Interesting post Will.
You always recover the neatest relics.
Congrats,
Doug
