Hello All,
The Iron Brigade got out again today to a new site that I heard about from a friend. We scoped out the site for a while and located the wells and where we figured the house sat. After about 20 minutes of prep, we finally got our detectors ready to hit the site. There was a lot of trash (beer cans, screw caps, etc...) everywhere, so it made it difficult to find anything good. After some time, BuckleBoy found the sweet spot where we dug numerous clock and pocket watch pieces and many other pieces of old brass. By this time we only had an hour before we had to leave. We also located what appears to be a driveway leading up to the area where we were hunting. It was here where I pulled out a very interesting piece of brass marked "Channel Selector", maybe from an old radio. I'll post a pic of it later in "what is it?". Anyway, we were down to about 15 mins. before we had to leave and I got a very "iffy" signal that read like a pulltab on my XLT, so I was not expecting much. I pushed the surface matter away with my foot to get a better pinpoint. When I went over the spot again, the signal disappeared. By this time I "knew" it was a pull tab
. I searched over the dead leaf and dirt matter I moved aside and there was the signal. I almost gave up on it, but I figured I should probably pick it up anyway so no one else would think it was a good target on future hunts. I pushed the dirt aside to locate the object and I noticed a flat piece of metal, so I picked it up and when I got a good look at it I almost dropped it. I could tell right away that I had just uncovered a Half Dime
. I carefully and VERY gently moved some of the dirt off of the surface of the tiny little piece of silver and saw the mint mark "O" signifing that it was made at the New Orleans Mint. I turned it over and saw the date "1854". By this time, BuckleBoy and RodeoRecon were already drooling over my newly uncovered treasure and sharing in this exciting moment. After getting it home and cleaning it I saw that it was covered in a thick black "film" which turned out to be ash. BuckleBoy had said earlier that the site appeared to have burned. I think the fire slightly melted one side of the coin causing 1/4 of the coin's details to look blurred, but it is still in great shape! I will post pics of the other stuff I found later after I get them cleaned. This is my FOURTH Half Dime since I got my XLT in November of 2007! This just goes to show that you should dig EVERYTHING even if you think it is trash. Please let me know what you think. Take care and HH!!
