Today's find was nothing fantastic, but I’m hoping it leads to many more finds.
I dug this CW bullet today at lunch within a few minutes of trying a new spot close to work. It was my very first signal!!! It was under a large oak tree root as you can see. The tree sits right on the edge of the flat land and a deep gully.
I wasted ½ of my lunch at Wal-Mart today so this MDing trip was more of a scouting mission.
Some of you may remember me mentioning that there was an old road that was used by troops during the CW within a 1/8th mile from where I work, and only ¼ mile from my usual lunchtime farm spot. I had passed by it for 15 years and never even knew it had existed until an older gentleman told me about it last summer. Today, it looks like a gully lined by large trees. Because it was a gully, I had thought it used to be a stream. Boy was I wrong. I was also informed that there was some sort of CW station or post set up right about where I found this bullet today.
This old road runs along the edge of two old farm properties. Part of the property is being developed right now into apartments.  I do have permission to MD a section CLOSE to this old road, but the actually gully road sits on the neighbors side. I was told the elderly lady owner is nice, but her daughter that lives there with her is not. I’m going to attempt to get permission to hunt this spot though. If I found a CW bullet that quick, who knows what sits down in that gully where the road actually was?
Sorry about the long-winded story, I’m just jazzed about a possible new CW site.
Any idea what kind of bullet this no-ringer is?

Nice find Doug----That looks like a great spot.

Yo Doug,
I bet that is a Cival War bullet.!! I bet it was fired at a yankee.(no offence to those "North" of the line.
You might have to take the daughter with you dress shopping. ha-ha.
Keep hitting that new spot, and keep those fantastic pic's flowing.

Good luck Doug. New spots are exciting. I'm working on a couple too. They don't sound quite as promising though.

I would say they are the more common one's. Between that and the regular plug base enfields. They are some very high dollar one's out there though. The S base enfield goes for around 500.00 for a real nice specimen. The best thing you can do is by a good bullet book. They have a lot of info in them. The one's I really like is the Civil War Projectiles book by Mason and McKee. Round Ball to Rimfire by Dean Thomas. Those are just a couple of them. This site here is also a good site that deals with civil war bullets there are many good freinds of mine on it. civilwarprojectiles.com if you need any more info let me know. Jonathon

Doug, would this place be a few miles north on Capital Blvd. I know of a place out there that has given up C/W stuff.

Thanks for that info. I'll be buying a good bullet book next.

Earl,
It is off of Capital Blvd up around Wake Forest. Have you hunted the property?

The place I am talking about is around the old truck stop about half way to Wake Forest. Where there was the old rd before they built US1.
I would like to get up with you some time and do some hunting. I don't really like going by myself.
I have never hunted the place I am referring to, but I have a couple friends that have. Well I have one friend, the other passed away and he was a fanatic about C/W relics. He had a collection that you wouldn't believe.

Earl,
That is the correct area. I'm going to be asking the property owners daughter next week. The elderly lady owner was a bit hesitant because someone detected on her property before, and she said they left holes everywhere. Not cool. This may be a tough sell, but I'll keep you posted.

I would think that there would be some stuff by the river where the old road crossed, if that spot could be found. If I am not mistaken, I think the city of WF owns a lot of the land in the area of the river near where the crossing would have been.

There has to be CW stuff all over that area. I've found things in three different spots all very close. I was given a general area of where the old town of WF used to sit out in the woods way before it was moved to it's current location. The gentleman I spoke with has a brick from out there, and says the foundations of some of the buildings can still be found. That would be right in line with this old road and the RR that runs through there.
May be worth searching for before snake & tick season hits again. ;D
