Today's find was nothing fantastic, but I’m hoping it leads to many more finds.
I dug this CW bullet today at lunch within a few minutes of trying a new spot close to work. It was my very first signal!!! It was under a large oak tree root as you can see. The tree sits right on the edge of the flat land and a deep gully.
I wasted ½ of my lunch at Wal-Mart today so this MDing trip was more of a scouting mission.
Some of you may remember me mentioning that there was an old road that was used by troops during the CW within a 1/8th mile from where I work, and only ¼ mile from my usual lunchtime farm spot. I had passed by it for 15 years and never even knew it had existed until an older gentleman told me about it last summer. Today, it looks like a gully lined by large trees. Because it was a gully, I had thought it used to be a stream. Boy was I wrong. I was also informed that there was some sort of CW station or post set up right about where I found this bullet today.
This old road runs along the edge of two old farm properties. Part of the property is being developed right now into apartments.  I do have permission to MD a section CLOSE to this old road, but the actually gully road sits on the neighbors side. I was told the elderly lady owner is nice, but her daughter that lives there with her is not. I’m going to attempt to get permission to hunt this spot though. If I found a CW bullet that quick, who knows what sits down in that gully where the road actually was?
Sorry about the long-winded story, I’m just jazzed about a possible new CW site.
Any idea what kind of bullet this no-ringer is?

Thanks KFB.
You got that right. He can probably tell me from which direction it was shot from, and what the weather was on that particular day too. ;D ;) BB is a wealth of knowledge.

It looks like it was dropped, and the weather was partly cloudy that day. ;D Thank you for the kind words, MM, and best of luck to you in '08!

BB,
First off, YOU are the Man!
Second, yes there is a # inside. You just taught me something new about the Enfields. I had no clue there were #'s inside. Now I'll have to check my other ones. ;D
In the last picture above, you can see the "5" upside-down. Here are a few more pictures for all to see.
It says "57" inside. I'm assuming this is a .57 caliber, and not the year it was made ;D
Thanks again for that great info,
MM

Nice dig. It looks like a 577 enfield . You have a good looking spot, that might produce some good "stuff"

Very nice Enfield Bullet, that site has alot of excellent potential. Good Hunting, keep us posted on your finds

Very nice find Doug :o I'm glad you're hard work and dedication to the hobby pays off for you.

P1853 Enfield bullet, plug base. I hope that you did not pull the wood plug that was supposed to be in. Believe it or not, some are dug with the wood plug still in the bullet. The 57 base Enfields are typically attributed to British manufacture and used by the Confederates. Nice find.

Nice find buddy. Your pics are excellent and it looks like you have a great place to get goodies.

Yes that is a enfield. It looks to me like a 57 base enfield. I believe I can see a faint 7 beside the 5. There are many numbered and lettered enfield bullets along with different size letters in the base. I will name a few of the letter and numbered one's. Here are some of the numbers you can find in the base. small 57, med 57, large 57, backwards 57, 55, numbers 1-8 . some of the lettered one's are S,P,backwardsP, V, just to name a few. There are many more markings in them. Great bullet. Jonathon

Thank you.
I ran across a web site today where the guy was selling a lot of these bullets with numbers and/or letters inside. He was getting anywhere from $25 to over $100 on them. He had one Enfield with a #55 inside that sold for $109. Is that a rare one? Is my #57 more common? Any idea of the value?
Thanks,
MM

No plug in this one, only dirt. ;D

Thanks Nana.
I stopped by today to talk to the 90 year old property owner. She said that others have detected there before in the past and left holes all over her yard, so this may be a tough sell. I told her I've been working across the road for over 15 years now, and hunt at two of her neighbors properties. She was nice after that and o.k. with the idea, BUT she wants me to ask her daughter who was out of town and watches over her and the property now. I heard the daughter was a bit tough to deal with. :o I better bring a gift & wear my best dress when I meet her. ;)
I'll keep you posted,
Doug
