Detector(s) used
BH pioneer ex
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
hunted all day with two friends that have tesoro's, used one myself for a couple of hours before switching back to my pioneer ex. i like the depth of the tesoros but i have just got to have the vdi or vid, whichever. they spend all their time digging nails and stuff while i spend all my time pulling coins out of the ground. thought i wanted a cibola or silver umax but now i know that as for me i just have to have a machine that identifies whats in the ground (to an extent)before i dig.

HEY! quit looking and not replying or ELSE

Yep I know what ya mean. The idea with the pure analog detectors like the beep and dig Tesoros is that with time you can tell by the sound what your digging.
With the digital detectors the sounds are more artificial computer generated and you can not tell the difference in what coin you are digging by the audio. But the machines that have numeric read outs to let you know by a number what your digging is nice but also a guess. They say their is alot more information in sound and let your brain be the computer to deciefer the audio information as to what you are digging.

This may be true to some extent, but I dig MUCH less trash and have much more fun using my F2 than my Vaquero. The pinpoint feature is much better IMO, and knowing the depth in inches before digging helps so much in target recovery.

for me part of the challenge is being able to interpret what the machine is saying. Sound quality, consistency, pattern (yes, there are some), moving the coil around -- all contribute to me and the machine working together as one. My fear with VDI is I lose that bond. Folks take action solely by what the screen says w/o understanding the subtleties. When it comes down to just that, I lose the sense of fun - for me - that got me into this. Caveat is to still learn the audio but consider the VDI as just another data point - I can live with that

I am a beep and dig guy and to each his own. I can tell a lot about the target from my Tesoro audio before I dig. If I don't want to dig junk I just turn up the Disc and have at it. I would get a VDI if somebody made one that was consistently accurate enough to trust even 85 percent of the time. On a VDI, when you can't trust the display all you have is a non-analog generated tone that gives no target info. Now maybe multi-tone could help out, but if the VDI is lying, so is the tone. The Fisher F5 and F70 get my interest, but they are to prone to EMI. Same for the Omega. When they make a more reliable VDI I will be first in line to buy one. Until then, beep and dig for me.

If you get out of the park, you will appreciate the deeper machines. I try to mostly surface hunt the good signals. I only go deep when the park fills up and I cant get at my Favorite spots.

Different strokes for different folks they say. It largely depends on what "kind" of detecting you mainly do. I now do mainly field hunting at old previous home sites and the Vaquero is as deep as they come and sniffs out everything I want it to. I don't dig any nails either.

I have a couple beep and dig machines, when I read how much info they get from one tone I don't get it. Tesoro users will say its sharpness of tone and size of target, like other machinesdon't give the same plus may more. Packerbacker get your checkbook out and buy a explorer. I can do better than 85 percent anyday.

LOL! What newbies don't know does hurt them. :hello:

Dirtscratcher, is that one of them machines Minelab quit supporting? Or is that next year they drop the support on that one. If I buy a VDI machine it probably won't be from a company that just drops all support of it's detector.

My exp;orer is 13 years old and I've been detecting longer then that. When and if it breaks I will buy another. To buy a metal detector for a lifetime warranty to me is silly, I would rather have one that performs how I want it to . And tesoroes fall short for me although my grandchildren use them in totlots quite well. Terry just because I'm new to internet does'nt mean I'm new to detecting. I bought in to the tesoro hype and as far as I'm concerned wasted my money.

my mxt i find nickles all the time in full discretion by listening to the threshold and watching the screen threshold breaks I look at the screen is says nickle vdi says 18 I dig theirs the nickle not one beep...I love my white's detectors

I'm jewelry hunter first, coinhunter second. If ya want the gold you will dig the trash thats where it is. If your happy with clad then crank your discriminators and leave the trash for me.

What? My comment is aimed at a newbie that that "likes the depth of the Tesoro," but is going back to his Bounty Hunter because it has a cute little screen. I know it upsets a lot of folks that my $450.00 Tesoro Vaquero can find anything their $1,000.00 Minelab can find. Whatever, to each thier own.

Dirtscratcher, to each his own. I am happy with what I have. I have looked at minelab but am turned off by the price and slow recovery speed. If I were to buy a VDI I would seriously consider the Xtera 705 though or an MXT Pro. When I look at the price though my mind screams Vaquero for $450!

Well I'm new to the hobby . One month . I have tried two vdi units . Both were correct maybe one out of ten. That's not a good test rate . I did find that with actually thinking about it I would know a good Target . It was.by the sound not the screen . I think the vdi is actually random or fake . Lol just to make you think it is doing something . So I returned those two and have a cibola , it should be here Thursday . I am a very picky person and hard to please so I will.let you know what I think . The only thing that was reasonably acvurrate was the depth , which I might miss . Probably lots of people have to justify the big expences for the screens . The proof is in the pudding

The people who can't get good finds with a beep and dig are mediocre at best metal detectorists. I've noticed the "Little ***** Syndrome" with everything from cars to metal detectors. They think the more they spend the better it is. Dirtscratcher really really really sounds like an idiot trying to justify his purchase. "Lifetime warranty is silly''? No person with a working brain would rather pay for something again.

ive had a tesoro outlaw for acouple of weeks now and just cant seem to spend the energy into learning the machine ...ive hunted my yard to death and figured it would be a good machine to see what i missed but after ground balancing it and looking for some beep's i came up with iron....so i dug alittle more solid signals ...came up with pull tabs and beaver tails...that was with turning the discrim up to about the dime /quarter area...so i gave up on it and im back to the root of all evil...the garret ace 350 /cry
