Hi pepperjLook at the size reference 3" long, now look at the pencil.
Now look at the finial you posted.
Right idea but not for a post, it might be for the single picket.
This is why I like you. Well, one of the reasons.Look at the size reference 3" long, now look at the pencil.

That's a guess, isn't it? Can you please find me a picture of a plumb bob that looks anything like that? Especially one with that rectangular hole through it.That's an old masenary plumb bob. I think there are people who collect them, but not sure.
That far left one is the closest. My piece is 72mm.Hi pepperj
Yes you are right, but they come in all sizes...Like these Railheads.

No, it is non-magnetic. Copper or brass, most likely. No real corrosion on it, so that eliminates zinc or other white metals. It is iron right? Or?
photos of other sides? Top ,bottom?
I did see some vaguely similar plumb bobs . But without the rectangular whole.
I gave you a WINNER thing Robot, because you agreed with me. OK fella's, lets all follow Robot's example.Hi Iron Buzz

It has that air of antiquity about it. If I found sonething like that here in England my initial thoughts though not having a clue as to what it actually is woild be that it's post medieval, 18th century at the very latest.
Being of a nonferrous item it pretty well illuminates the finial option as well. No, it is non-magnetic. Copper or brass, most likely. No real corrosion on it, so that eliminates zinc or other white metals.
