I searched some old wheat penny rolls that looked to be unsearched and forgotten for some time and I found a really cool off metal lincoln. Please, someone help me to identify this coin. The coin has a plating of some sort; most likely copper, and the underlying metal is white! Really and truly, this coin needs to be checked out. There has not been any alterations to the coin and what you see is real. off metal 009.webpoff metal 001.webpoff metal 012.webp

My fist opinion before reading the thread was it was coated with varnish. I still think so. There are many reasons to do so (scrap book of dad and its his birth year etc,). To save the $65 grading fee just put some paint remover on it. Then come back and tell us we were all wrong, or not.
Yup, soak it in acetone for a few hours. It won't hurt the coin. Any paint, varnish, shellac, etc, should dissolve. If it doesn't, it may be plated. Either way, the mint didn't produce it that way, so , no added value.

My two cents... and I'm new to Tnet also, and these posters are SMART. The only moron I see posting in here is well, me... But I go with the majority on this one. The coin looks great and if my 2013 coin book is correct, the 36D is worth $5 in MS-63 condition. I don't know how they grade coins but if it's anything like when I get my 1930's baseball cards graded, if it's been altered in any way, that's not a good thing and won't even get a grade, if coins work differently than maybe you have something. Come back with a grade and let us be in awe.

Fortunately, your opinion is incorrect. There is no reason to cover a copper penny in glue and shellac only to make it look more copper. In fact, I do believe this Lincoln cent to be authentic in its form of a plated white metal. The coins appearance is clear; you must see firsthand in order to fully agree. Also, even with glue and shellac, I find it impossible for the copper to be untoned in such a way. I have been collecting and studying the metal of these lincoln cents and this coin is in fact either experimental or error of a sort. Under the plating is a decent finish and when i say mint state, I mean MS condition; the details of the coin are not worn and fully legible as if issued recently from the mint. Thanks for the response :)

Seems that you have come to some agreement with yourself on what the coin and what it isn't and the opinion of others isn't going to sway your train of thought.
BTW I just found one of many links that refer to varnished or coated pennies and how to take it off, so it happens for what reason I'm not sure maybe to make them look pretty.

I disagree with everybody and everything. It is best to think that you have discovered the rarest thing in the world and hold on to it. That way you can tell all your friends and family what you have. I do it all the time with the things I find. Take this for example:

IMG_0501.webp

Most people look at this and see a fire nugget. I see part of a melted Spanish Reale. I sent a text to all my friends and family that I have found Spanish silver. Everybody gets all excited and asks if they can go on my next hunt. What it really is irrelevant. (except that I tested for silver and I know that is what it is.) But that amount of silver in that form is worth maybe a buck or two. But in my eyes it is priceless spanish reales. So keep on keeping on, and then keep on some more. If you want to sell it then I will give you at least 3x face value. That means you triple your investment. I will give you three cents for one penny. However, I'm not paying for shipping...

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Am I for real? That is a very good question. How does anybody really know if they are real? I think therefore I am. I've always thought that was a cop-out answer. I guess it all depends on how you define reality. Which only you can do for yourself. I assure you that my reality would make very little sense to you. Thus, I will reflect that question back to you. Am I real for you?

If you were referring to the content of the post, then I was 98% joking and 2% for real. The harder question is which 2% was for real?

Its hard for me to tell whether you are joking or not. You keep posting melted blobs of aluminum and claim that they are silver http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/w...-old-discovery-never-totally-figured-out.html and now you claim they are melted Spanish Reales? OK we all laughed. Ha ha Everyone loves a joke but please stop it because its not funny anymore.

Here is an old post for you to read. It even look like your "treasure" piece. Are you sure you are not 2% joking? http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/what/167464-chunk-silver.html

I guess if he has friends, he's "for real".....that's assuming they're not imaginary friends......hummm.....that would make us imaginary too I guess, since we're corresponding with him! :icon_scratch: :laughing7:

members .. why do you keep asking him if he is trying to sell ?
he is posting in what is it.

If you's insist on underhandedly accusing him or anyone of trying to sell

Your posts are going to Disappear !

& if that doesn't work, perhaps a Ban from what is it will !!!!

or perhaps banned from everywhere but Classifieds & nonsense.

[I gotta get out detecting ! Lack of detecting is giving me male pms symptoms.. BEWARE]

My opinion is to give Mikey a break. I believe, from reading all of his posts, that he has not been looking a coins long, and probably has big dreams.

What at we can do here is give him our opinions and advice. He will eventually learn from experience, or he will not.

I also endorse the advice from Jeff. Leave the ad hominem remarks off the forum. They add nothing. If Mikey wants to believe his coins are special, let him believe it. Who knows? Perhaps with enough experience he will find some rare and valuable coins.

I dont have his exact quote but I believe he said he was a very experienced coin collector or something like that.

Here is where I disagree. Now I dont know if Mikey is 12 years old or 80 but I believe we have a duty to be honest. I have to assume he has come to the What Is It forum for honest answers. We are providing a service here in this forum.. Sometimes there is no nice way to tell someone the truth especially when they keep insisting they have found something unique. Of course we have to follow the rules and Jeff is here to enforce them.

You are correct . This is What is it, & the truth as you believe it should be told.
But .
Attacking a members sanity, intentions, or Education can cause trouble.

I'm not pointing fingers, Just responding to you post

I may have misunderstood the Questions of does he want to sell In his posts.
they may have been legit offers to Buy,
or accusations he is here for nefarious reasons :dontknow:
or to try and get a laugh at the op's expense :(
If they are Accusations or for rude intentions they better stop now
