My vote is curtain weight also. I've dug these at house sites, but generally the "newer" house sites (like 1910ish or newer).

I have heard many uses for them. Another use that I have heard is a frock coat weight. It kept the ends from rolling up on the soldiers uniform coat. Many have been found in civil war sites and camps. Jonathon

I've found two of those before also. Both were from different farms where I've found CW relics.

i would not call it old i remember these from when i was a kid.
i remember pulling one out of some drapes in the late seventies.

These were around in the 1800's so I'd say the only way to get a better idea of how old it was is to age the site it was found on.
