Well, yesterday I posted that I found *something* - put that post in General Discussion - later on I found out on another forum that what I actually have is a pretty old Hopi jar. I really want to sell it - I just don't know what I should do and how to go about it - being that there is one chip on the inside and the bottom is pretty scratched up.

So here are the photos - I'd like your feedback on what to do - and how to go about selling this - and where. One knowledgeable person mentioned I should go to an auction house that deals with Native arts.

So your thoughts please.

Its a nice looking item.
My only advice would be... Research it personally to have a good understanding of the value before you decide what money you will accept for it.

Nice looking but I wouldnt know the value of it. Do some research and find the age of it then google it and see what they have been selling for. Check different sites for sales and consider the damage on it for the value you are looking for. Some sites will sell it for you for a percentage of the selling price. It sure is nice looking.

I'm no expert so like Gator and rock said find you one. Anyone that is a expert on Hopi pottery can tell you just what clan made it. I have a few concerns tho on the piece. 1st the bird looks to be of a South American type, 2nd the color looks a little off for Hopi ware that I have seen, but I'm no expert. Have more than one person give you their advice on it and like I said if it is Hopi they will be abel to tell you where it came from and the clan that made it. Another little thing if it is prehistory Hopi they get real upset for a nonHopi to own it. Keep us updated , I would love to own it. Welcome to Tnet:hello:

I think it would look good in your collection Rack.

I would like to see pictures of the top and bottom. Also, could you tell us how you came about the jar? and, lastly, how big is it?

looks to be black on red pueblo potteryblack on red.webp <<<this is a known Hopi piece with a weird bird. The red glaze on yours IMO dates it to around 1900 plus or minus 50. A lot of nice stuff was being made for sale back then. Some of it is worth a fair amount now, especially if the artist is known. Most of the designs used on their art were taken from authentic ancestral artifacts and crafted the old school way.1647258[1].webp<<<this is a Nampeyo piece from the turn of the century.
Like they said FIND an EXPERT before you sell it!!!!!

Heck Ill be the first Ill give you $50

I'll get the photos as soon as I'm able to get some good light. It's about 5.5inches height - around 4 across. I got it at a thrift shop :) for about 3 dollars.

I was looking and seeing a gazelle or some kind of impala - then you said bird and I totally now see a macaw. I'd be really interested to learn about the various animals these Hopi tribes incorporated into their art. So far google is eluding me. My thoughts are probably all the good info is either at the museums or in books. Thanks for the good advice.
