Hi Guys

Out today for a run as it was sunny and +3.... lasted for 3 hrs then the wind came up strong and sun went in.

The old military button was found by my hunting bud.... very nice... this pic is as it was uncleaned.

Crown with cross at the top is very interesting... first I,ve seen anywhere .....edges are perfect with no cracks.

Can anyone please ID this button ?

Found the pistol guard at about 8 inches.... happy to have that piece !

Found the ring in very slimy mud at the edge of the rocks meeting the mud. Has what appears to be 2 diamonds. Nice bonus.!!!

Ring has CORONA 10K on the inside of the band....but is black all over.....cleaned it some and appears to be gold color coming out on the band. Will soak it over night in cleaner.
Must be very low quality gold. ??

41.6% gold and Corona is in fact a Canadian company. Another good hunt buddy. The gun piece is really nice. That button is awesome too

Damn that button looks old! No clue as to id but has a really nice old look to it. I'm sure IP will nail it down for you

That's a great hunt...I never would have guessed that the ring is gold but you nailed it!

Looks like you got a lead seal there as well!

Great button! Rev War 84th Highland Emigrants. Enlisted soldier pattern Circa. 1776-1778.

That's entering banner territory.

That is excellent condition. You should tell you friend to try and come up with some type of tool/device, not sure exactly what, but something you can hold like a pencil and has the same type of grit surface as an emery board nail file. You than carefully sand away the little corrosion that is there between the raised detail and it will look great. I don't know what this device would be, but I guarantee if it was my find I'd figure it out and the button would look even better. Or that might even just be dirt on there, just use a bit of soap and water and a little brushing to remove it before it's sealed. Regardless, that's a nice one.

TY very much for the information..muchly appreciated.

I will pass it on to him and try to talk him into cleaning it.

I told him last night to clean it a little bit by running it under warm water with little bit of hand soap and gently rub it with his fingers.

Asked him this morning how it turned out...he said ... no way I didn,t clean it ..I put it in my case and wouldn,t even let the wife touch it ..lol.

He is scared to hurt it... I,ll tell him again tonight when I call to tell him that he has a special button.

I just read your post again and see it wasn't cleaned... so it's probably just dirt and will easily come off. Probably no need to do anything fancy, just soap, water, and a little brushing. If he plans to seal it, it would be pretty dumb to leave dirt on that you can wash away. But he has the right idea, don't mess with something until you are sure.

That is a real nice button, but looking again I see it looks more like the 17mm and not the coat size. So 2nd from the left on that repro. page.

You fellas won't have any buttons left to find when spring finally shows up! Lol

You guys have the right place to look no doubt about that, lots of cool old stuff to find, the trigger guard is nice too!

Should look very nice cleaned..will post a pick of it tomorrow if I can talk him into cleaning it.

You can tell him that button is the exact same idea as if he dug a silver 2 reales and is leaving the dirt on. It's not the same type of cleaning compared to something that's corroded which you would need peroxide or lemon juice, or something like that. That type of cleaning is like cleaning your boots after the hunt! It's an absolute no brainer. Nothing will change except the dirt will be gone. (Like cleaning a lead bullet or seal or whatever)

The biggest danger is dropping it. So always make sure when you handle it it's over something soft. When you clean it just get a little glass of warm water and some soap, and do it over a towel... or put water in the sink so if it falls he's swimming and not in need of surgery. :laughing7: Dropping a pewter button on a hard surface, even just a few inches, can easily break the edge or worse. Better fix him up with one of those cases! :headbang:

HEHE.. alreday done...RICK and ZDD were down yesterday for a hunt... so I got him to bring a button case like yours for my friend...it is already in it . !!!

Willl make sure he safe guards against damage when cleaning....ty for the advise. !!

PS... your words are completely true... I dropped my RP button on the kitchen counter... ONLY 3 INCHES.. and a tiny chip came outta it....very small but I couldn,t believe it...if had dropped it a couple feet on a really hard surface it would prolly be a mess !!!!.

So I totally believe you about how you treated your 5k button.
