A good friend of mine was telling me about some foundations he knows of from deer hunting throughout the local area, so of course I just had to check it out. I had to follow a stream a 1/4 mile to an abandoned road. At this road was his hunting cabin, further up that road was some old foundations. I only had time for an hour hunt before it got dark, but this site was like being the first person to search an early 1800s home. Definately worth going back to. Found this silver thimble, a civilian flat button with the only readable word on the back being (TREBLE) this orange pencil thingy that says (WAHL EVERSHARP) looks like a recent drop though. Now the thing that really surprised me was this 1834 Large Cent in sweeeet condition. This LC was less than 1/4 inch down and gave my machine the overload tone, I brushed some dirt away with my hand and there she was. Im really looking forward to a full day of combing that whole area. enjoy the pictures.

ok, had to add some pictures of another thing I found, looks like a piece of a large cent, I hope you can see it in the pictures, when I look at it magnified I can see a date of 1848 or maybe 1846. And the reverse I can barely make out the word STATES, I threw it in
peroxide because I didnt know what it was, it appears to have been flattened, and the break seemed too rigid to be a coin. but after a bit of cleaning it really does appear to be a LC.

Re: Old road leads to some great finds

That 1834 Coronet cent is in great shape. There's more waiting for you there.

Re: Old road leads to some great finds

Great detail on the large copper. Looks like a very promising area.

Re: Old road leads to some great finds

Nice!!! Sounds like a place you can take your time and possibly clean house. Good luck and good effort getting back there. Also, If that stream is closeby at all I would be swinging near there as well.

Re: Old road leads to some great finds

Be careful in them woods. Nice, promissing area. I hope whoever shot up that sign is friendly :o

Re: Old road leads to some great finds

OK, so whats your opinion? Do you think its the large 8 and stars variety? ....looking in the book, it seems kinda close.

Wonderful stuff, lab. Finding a large cent and a silver thimble is a good sign that there's more for you there.

That's my favorite type of site to dig. :icon_sunny:

Re: Old road leads to some great finds

theres more there oh ya count on it -- the flat button were poular in 1820ish time frame --they used them later too but most are thought of as a 1820ish time item -- the treble meant "triple gilted" as in our buttons gold plating color is three times as thick as a "standard one" --it called a quality mark -- button makers touted the "quality" of their buttons with such wording and terms in early to mid 1800's time frame

Re: Old road leads to some great finds

Nice work! I love the L.C. and the silver thimble. There should be a makers mark stamped inside the thimble, if so you can trace down the manufacturer.

Much luck to you!

keep us posted. this looks like its going to get real interesting

I went back this morning, posted finds as (matron head at abandoned road site)

The 1834 is a Newcomb 2 variety, Very Common Rarity 1, small 8.

sweet LC"S! love that thimble also, you got yourself a site with lots of potential

the second item looks to be a part of a large cent

Im thinking that the 2nd item was a large cent that was used as a shim. In the older houses they used to use them for spacers for rafters and beams. Sometimes when they are found with holes in them thats a good indication that thats what they were used for, I was also told that the home owner would have one specificaly placed somewhere for good luck during the homes construction. Depending on where it was and how much weight it was holding may have been a factor in its extended size, Im also guessing that frigid cold temperatures could have resulted in its rigid break. But these are only guesses.

WOW awesome finds and looks like a great place to hunt  got to be more there :icon_sunny:
