I just went down the my street and knocked on every door to every old house asking if they would mind if I did some metal detecting in their yards because I knew they had older houses.

Out of 24 houses that I asked, 17 said sure no problem. I expected maybe 1 or 2 but most people were completely fine with it and even seemed interested to see what I might be able to find.

None of them are super old, but all were built between 1930 and 1940. That's old enough for silver and wheaties so I'm really excited! Should keep me busy for a really long time too.

That's the drive that makes a person successful in this hobby. Just add some good research and you're good to go.

I read a guys advice on door knocking. He recommended that you try to detect the day you get permission. That way you don't run into the issue of people forgetting they gave you permission, spouses not knowing and either getting mad or just saying "no, I'd rather you didn't". Of course, since it is your street, presumably people may know you from the neighborhood and it might be different than just knocking on a random door as you're driving around. Good luck, keep us posted on what you find!

I've got to get the nerve up to do that. My township was founded in 1812, and it's been a fork in the road since the 1600's. It's all middle class and summer people here nowadays though, I'd be in constant fear of cutting someones cable line, or leaving a bad plug on their immaculate lawn.

Try using these 2 methods I've tried with great success. Particularly the D shape plug method. Courtesy of Bob Sickler via Tesoro's website.

You have bare cables running underground?? Everything runs overhead or in conduit around here. As for plugs, check out the various methods here and on u-tube for clean, barely noticeable recoveries and practice them in you own yard before you go anywhere else.

Almost every phone and cable line in my area is underground and not in conduit. I know I've cut my own after phone company mis-marked my line by 6 inches.

6 Inches isn't much.....I'd say that was pretty darn accurate. I'm still amazed they run it underground without any protection from the elements or errant shovels.
