HIGH COUNTRY LEGENDS

The Lost Padre Mine







Stationed at Chihuaha, New Mexico in 1797 during the last years of the Spanish occupation, was a priest named LaRue. Father LaRue, while sitting with an old dying soldier, listened while the soldier told him of a rich gold-bearing load in the mountains north of El Paso del Norte (El Paso, Texas today.)



The soldier explained to LaRue that the mother lode could be found by traveling one day north of El Paso until three small peaks could be seen. When the peaks came into view, the journey would turn east across the desert to the mountains. In the first mountain range, there would be a basin with a spring at the foot of a solitary peak. Upon this mountain was to be found a rich vein of gold.




The Organ Mountains



Shortly after the soldier died, Chihuaha settlement was devastated by drought and famine. The Padre called the villagers together asking if they would follow him north to a better climate and more water. They agreed and the party migrated to the north. After crossing El Paso del Norte, they followed the course of the Rio Grande to the small village of La Mesilla near Las Cruces, New Mexico. North of there, they sighted the three peaks and turned east across the dreaded Jornada del Muerto desert, finally arriving in the San Andreas Mountains. After a couple of days of exploration, they located a basin in which there was a spring at the base of a solitary peak, just as the old man had said. Settling the new colony at Spirit Springs in Dona Ana County, Larue sent the men out to search for the gold. On one side of the peak, they located a rich vein in a deep canyon southwest of the springs. They tunneled into the mountain and followed the vein downward. The deeper they went, the richer the ore became. The priest assigned dozens of monks and Indians to mine the gold, form it into ingots and stack it along one wall of a natural cavern inside the mountain. For two years LaRue extracted the gold from the mountain, stockpiling it.

Word leaked into Mexico that LaRue had set up his own little empire and he was extracting large quantities of gold. The Spaniards wasted no time in rounding up an expedition to send north.

When a small group was in La Mesilla purchasing supplies they learned the Mexican Army was on the horizon. Hurrying to camp, they spread the alarm. It was one thing for Padre La Rue to leave his post without permission of church officials in Mexico City, but it was quite another not to deliver the Royal Fifth (or Quinta) of the gold for shipment to Spain.

Father La Rue immediately set about concealing all traces of the mine. Working day and night, knowing the soldiers were drawing ever closer, he had his little group labor to seal the entrance to the mine. When the soldiers finally arrived and demanded to know where the gold came from which was used to purchase the supplies in La Mesilla, Padre La Rue refused to answer. He died under torture, as did many of his followers. The soldiers searched the entire area, but finding no clues, they returned to Mexico empty-handed.

Although the historical facts suggest LaRue was in the Organ Mountains between present day Las Cruces and Alamogordo, his mining operation was deep in the San Andres Mountains north of Las Cruces. It was here, according to legend that the treasure was concealed.

I have worked with a grandson of Doc Noss, for FOUR yrs, and I know for a fact, that they are not the same!
As you may not know, there was more than JUST Gold in "Vic Peak" !
I have seen and held artifacts that Doc and his Wife, Ova, brought back from the "Peak"!
And!
Those artifacts were NOT Gold Bars!
Among them, AND! Unless, Padre La Rue worn a CROWN!
AND!
Carried a Sword made in The 1700s, in Germany!

Here is a quote from another of my posts in the Victorio Peak Thread:

"This could not be Padre LaRue's gold for the simple reason that the directions given to the Padre by the old man were; "One days travel North of El Paso del Norte until you see three peaks. It was not in Oklahoma, and it was not at Victorio Peak! As far as anybody knows, the Padre La Rue Gold has never been found! It's not really that hard to do just a cursory Google Search, and five minutes worth of reading to at least get a little knowledge about a thread you are planning on posting to! Sorry about that, it's just that every thread I look at has people making wild claims and assumptions about things that it's obvious they haven't researched in the least!?! Didn't mean to preach...............

I see no preaching, just good solid advice from a fellow TNeter. Agree all the way. If the legend is at all accurate (and I believe part of it is) we're talking two VERY separate caches.
Now if I just had my Infrared camera and a good cave locater....and a cute hunting partner and lots of cold drinks....

You will come upon this!
This is, seen from an aeroplane ..... as it's on top of a "Mesa"
This figure measures 350 yds, nose to tip of the ear !
There is a trail coming up from the right hand side, not visible in this photo.
It goes up to the round, "Jaw" Area...
And, disappears under the circular, aka "Jaw", area !

about the same distance from the placer cave at the top of and north of baylor pass

about 5 miles west of the LUE deposit

18 miles round trip from my Dads Cave ( Harvey Snow's )

7 miles west of El Chato's Dwelling under a hugh boulder on the southeast wall of Soledad canyon

8 /34 miles from the entrance to a cavern beneath a peak on a ridge
coming east off of Organ peak

where the Tules are at just west of that Ice Cream cone and the base of Soledad peak which has TWO heads, ( split in TWO )

He was also a participant of the Goldfinder 2 fiasco at Victorio Peak in
March of 1972

He is mentioned as receiving a threatening phone call
on his children, if he did not stay away from the operation on Victorio Peak

In the book 100 tons of Gold
He gave an account of finding a subsurface cavern
in the San Andres, that he followed for 14 miles
underground, to where it came up out in the Joranado off the edge of whitesands
Tho the story he told was bogus
giving false leads in it
there is a cavern none the less

A young guy, working as a sheepherder in the San Andres, did indeed
enter a cavern
he was lost in there for about 3 days
when he found an exit
it did come out on the west side of the mountains out in the flat
The boy was near maniacal from the experience.

Evidence within my Dads effects, showed that he did find a cavern
and that it was in the San Andes

and as he pointed the location out to me for the entrance
it is no where near hardscrabble

The Goldfinder operation was a total freakshow of various claimants and looky loos

JACKO OLE BUDDY: Here is a book that tells one of the versions. I see that treasure minder, and others, have different versions also, have fun.

Incidentally, the data about needng permision to leave the Hacienda is correct. The native people came with the land and were 'owned' by the Hacienda /Land grant Owner. They needed written permission to leave the boundries, and whippings, torture, and sometimes the punishment of death, was given if caught outside of it's boundries with out this permission as an example to the others.

This was under the "Encomiedo " decree which gave ownership of the native people to the Ower of the land, and excused this treatment under the theory that the Hacienderos needed a stable resident work force to exist.

Okay, you have shown us your bonafides. I like the way you describe the various treasure troves as being close by you. How about getting a group of solid citizens from this forum together and recovering some of this magnificent treasure?
Obviously, a portion would have to be used to protect you from the various governmental, religious, and private agencies that are hounding you.
But with a massive amount of treasure, you could be freed from surveillance and tracking. You could regain your life with a new name and face.
Think about it. A chance for a "regular" life just for helping good people recover some golden treasure.

His treasure was buried in the panhandle
of Oklahoma and it has been retrieved.
Nearly all the treasures that are publicly

dowser or had many maps. I believe he
