Painting Dimes Silver? What a Solid Way To Spend Spare Time

Going through my boxes I picked up yesterday and I have come across 3 dimes that someone painted, or spray painted silver - Guess they thought it a good joke? I have come across some in halves and read other posts about people seeing the same thing - but dimes also? I am amazed that someone would think that would be a quality way to spend your spare time. They did not fool me as the rims were way too bright and not the right color. What's next? Getting some bronze paint and trying to have a laugh on people searching for copper.....

If I ever post that I am beginning to paint dimes in order to fool people and have a laugh on them, someone please PM me and tell me to find another hobby.

I've found a bunch of halves painted silver, not dimes though. People are just trying to ruin roll hunting for others. Maybe they think it will get people to give up on it. If they get people in their own area to quit hunting it's more silver for them.

I feel the same way about people who mark up their halves. I always thought it would be kind of sweet justice for a half dollar hunter who marks his/her halves to find a bunch of fake silver rimmed marked halves.

I have yet to see a faked silver rimmed marked half in my area, but lots of otherwise graffitied halves.

I've not seen silver painted half rims yet, but I have seen a lot of half rims marked with an off-white that looks almost silver, and a few half rims marked dark to look like tarnished rims. Someone must be bored.

almost makes you want to paint a copper colored stripe onto a silver coin's edge and have them throw it back into the wild.

i too have noticed this...its REALLY bad with quarters...you can usually find 1-3 per box of $500.00 when searching quarters...its horrible. keep it up and hh! [R.I.P. Rich Hartford]

We had a seeded hunt for our local metal detecting club. They painted the edges of about 200 quarters with silver paint so that we could tell that they were ours. They then gave out prizes based on how many quarters you found. Those quarters will eventually go back into circulation.

So I wouldn't assume that it is always someone trying to mess with CRH's. Perhaps they had another reason for painting their halves/quarters/dimes.

What I'd like to know is why someone would go through the trouble of chrome-plating a coin. I've even found a chrome-plated 1964 dime.

I didn't choose the color so I can only speculate. But I would say that painting them silver doesn't alter the appearance drastically but still gets the job done. Painting them red for example might raise some alarms with others who might eventually want to spend them.

Funny, I got tricked with a 1989 dime painted with a silver colored paint... As for the 1967 painted half, if someone is purposely painting non-silver half dollars to fool people, chances are that someone wanted to dip the half dollar in paint to make it look appealing to them. I do not think someone would mark a silver half with silver paint to fool someone, but you never know...

Anyways, those silver painted coins get me mad!!!

I've always guessed it was done by people who work in chrome plating shops.

Never ran across a coin painted silver before, but some unknown prankster plated a 1974 Lincoln Cent I found to make it look like one of the famous "1974 Experimental Aluminum Cents", of which there are only two known to exist - one of which is on display at the Smithsonian. I was pretty excited until I threw it on the scale lol!
