People have been fined and jailed for relic huntung?

So no one has? That’s exactly what I thought. You’d have to be an idiot or dealing with a true ******* cop to get arrested. Not saying it’s not possible but clearly it doesn’t happen often. Being level headed and respectful has gotten me out of much hotter water than metal detecting.

A voice of fresh air.

This claim of supposed "arrests" and "confiscations" for daring to detect various public places. Yet when you go to ask for examples, none are ever forthcoming. And if any legal hassles CAN be pointed to, it's usually for someone who could have known better (with the slightest research). Or someone night-sneaking an obvious historic sensitive monument. Or someone being obnoxious who can't take a warning, etc.....

...., there were holes all over, ....

This has been a common theme , when reading various stories of how rangers or cops clamped down on night-hawkers. It's not uncommon , when you the post-event news debrief that the ONLY way they knew someone was detecting, was that holes were seen @ the next mornings. Contrast to actually bumping into md'rs.

Look at Fredericksburg. The whole place is historical, but that doesn't keep them from putting in new buildings and housing.

But you can bet those developers felt guilty, just as us md'rs are supposed to feel guilty. Right ? Oh ... wait ... ???
