pic. case ?

My mother found this at a site where alot of civil war artifacts are found and some coins up into the the late 1800,s, its 4 1/2 by 3 3/4 inchs it has german stamped on it and its only 1/4 inch thick. thanks for any help.

Possibly a cigarrette case...maybe the german pertains to the silver...
