looks like a silver plate on the one side, with a stone in the middle.

Looks like some sort of broach. You can see the remnants of the swivel pin on the back.

8 pointed star could make it a religious item ... ? or just random design. Im leaning toward the broach idea

Looks more like a hinge mount to me. Perhaps a small lid for a pill box or other small container??
