Hi everyone,
I am an amateur gold miner in Colorado. I recently found a Lewis Cass presidential candidate pipe buried about two feet down in the hole i was digging. I was wondering if anyone could help me with a value on this pipe? DSCN0483.JPGDSCN0484.JPGDSCN0486.JPGDSCN0487.JPG

I happen to be very good friends with Max Bell, who is an expert on Face pipes.I will pass this on to him....great find,I beleive the green is rare as I cant recall ever seein one!!

Before your pipe can be valued, it must be properly identified. Perhaps this will assist in that effort:
German-made pipes bearing the images of American politicians, including Franklin Pierce, Millard Fillmore, Henry Clay, Zachary Taylor, Ulysses S. Grant, and Lewis Cass were identified.

The Washington pipe is the only presidential style with a crown. Laurel wreathes were portrayed on the heads of Henry Clay, Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, and Lewis Cass, as well as an anthropomorphic female. Since Cass and Clay both lost their respective elections, wreaths presumably indicated leadership or stature rather than a victorious candidacy. Certainly—as occurs today—use of these pipes would tend to promote vigorous discussion regarding parties, candidates, and policies!
A few German clays are actually marked. The mark, although indistinct, appears to read Heinrich/Goebel, a pipe maker from Grossalmerode, Germany. The German-made Turk pipe is also represented in the Fort Union collection.

This is what Max had to say
"
German made for the American markrt. Dates started early 1850s and went to about 1861 when trade embargo stopped importing, Green is the rarest color value $100 plus MAX

In 2003, Sudbury updated his initial 1979 USA pipemaker survey with a 251 slide
Power Point presentation which included illustrations of 31 president pipes, including
19th Century specimens recovered from the Germany factories (Sudbury 2003a,
2003b). The Historic Clay Tobacco Pipes J. Byron Sudbury - Home web site includes a Grossalmerode-manufactured
German face pipe in the masthead; this anthropomorphic pipe is not one of those
under discussion in this paper but it does illustrate THE CLASSIC GREEN GLAZE IN USE
IN THE 1850s (Sudbury 2002). --My emphasis with the capped words.

Bell’s article is a short discussion of about 60 “face” pipes known to him (Bell 2004).
Bell presents eight figures; the first seven show two different examples each of
George Washington, Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, LEWIS CASS,
Henry Clay and Ulysses S. Grant.

Thanks for your help kuger. I tried myself to contact Max but he had company in town.
With a 100.00 value I think I'll hang on to it. After all the Green Glaze is considered very rare.
