I found this item tonight in a field that we have made many neat finds spanning from mid 1700s through early 1900s.

I found this item close to a wiped large cent, a 1825 half cent, and a colonial dandy button. My first thought was watch winder, but just not sure. The center part seems to be modeled after the 1842 $2.50 gold eagle coin, and the item was gold plated as a small amount of the plating is still visible.

What do you guys think?

Thank you very much guys, i thought thats what it mite be. I've never found one before so wasn't 100% sure.
Well you hit a home run on this first one. Certainly a top shelf recovery.

That coin looks genuine except for its surface patina. I'm wondering whether you are sure it is brass?
