Hi all,
I wasn't doing too much late yesterday afternoon so I decided to check a yard I had gotten permission to search one last time. I really must have cleaned out the yard since there was nothing left.
I was about ready to leave when this guy walks into the yard, curious to who I was. I told him I had gotten permission to check there about a month ago and luckily that was fine with him. He worked for a company that rehabs houses and then sells/rents them out.
The cool thing is that the guy was really nice and said I could check yet another vacant house they were working on about 4 or 5 houses down on the same street. I did this, but only found a key and one wheat in the back yard.
Before I left, he gave me the address of still another house a few miles away. I was tired so I thought I'd try the next day.
When I arrived at the house this morning, the guy's truck was there and I saw him working in the house. I asked if I could start my search, and he said fine. He talked with me as I began swinging the coil in the front yard. He was very interested in what I was doing and asked lots of questions about coins and MDing in general.
After digging clad in the front yard, I began finding wheats. I headed to the back yard and found yet another one by the back patio. The guy saw me dig it up so I let him keep it.
I decided to go back to the front yard, and he went inside to do some work..that's when I found my first silver coin, a 1960-D Rosie.
He hadn't had a chance to ask me if I found anything else by the time I popped out a second silver Rosie, a 1961-D.
Since I now had found two, I told the guy to come over and showed it to him. I kept the 61-D since it was my birth year and gave him the other one.
Beore long I had to go get something to eat. He left for the hardware store, so I checked the grass near the front entrance before I left and pulled out a 1956 silver Washington, only the 3rd one I've ever found. As I was leaving for lunch, he was just coming back from the hardware store.
After lunch, I came back to the house but the guy had left for the day so I never got a chance to tell him about the quarter. I began searching the whole front yard all over again. On the side of the house (whereI had already checked) I noticed broken pieces of clay pipe..the lateral sewer line had been replaced recently. I checked around it and got another dime signal. Only about 2 inches deep was a 1944-D Merc dime..kinda rare for a 50's neighborhood, but I'll take it! The Merc was only the second one I've ever found..my first (1941) was found at a park in 1995.
My total take besides the silver was 19 wheat pennies (oldest 1919),
over $5 in clad, a dog tag, and a cool little pocket knife with a pearl-looking handle.
