Hi all,

I wasn't doing too much late yesterday afternoon so I decided to check a yard I had gotten permission to search one last time. I really must have cleaned out the yard since there was nothing left.

I was about ready to leave when this guy walks into the yard, curious to who I was. I told him I had gotten permission to check there about a month ago and luckily that was fine with him. He worked for a company that rehabs houses and then sells/rents them out.

The cool thing is that the guy was really nice and said I could check yet another vacant house they were working on about 4 or 5 houses down on the same street. I did this, but only found a key and one wheat in the back yard.

Before I left, he gave me the address of still another house a few miles away. I was tired so I thought I'd try the next day.

When I arrived at the house this morning, the guy's truck was there and I saw him working in the house. I asked if I could start my search, and he said fine. He talked with me as I began swinging the coil in the front yard. He was very interested in what I was doing and asked lots of questions about coins and MDing in general.

After digging clad in the front yard, I began finding wheats. I headed to the back yard and found yet another one by the back patio. The guy saw me dig it up so I let him keep it.

I decided to go back to the front yard, and he went inside to do some work..that's when I found my first silver coin, a 1960-D Rosie.

He hadn't had a chance to ask me if I found anything else by the time I popped out a second silver Rosie, a 1961-D.

Since I now had found two, I told the guy to come over and showed it to him. I kept the 61-D since it was my birth year and gave him the other one.

Beore long I had to go get something to eat. He left for the hardware store, so I checked the grass near the front entrance before I left and pulled out a 1956 silver Washington, only the 3rd one I've ever found. As I was leaving for lunch, he was just coming back from the hardware store.

After lunch, I came back to the house but the guy had left for the day so I never got a chance to tell him about the quarter. I began searching the whole front yard all over again. On the side of the house (whereI had already checked) I noticed broken pieces of clay pipe..the lateral sewer line had been replaced recently. I checked around it and got another dime signal. Only about 2 inches deep was a 1944-D Merc dime..kinda rare for a 50's neighborhood, but I'll take it! The Merc was only the second one I've ever found..my first (1941) was found at a park in 1995.

My total take besides the silver was 19 wheat pennies (oldest 1919),
over $5 in clad, a dog tag, and a cool little pocket knife with a pearl-looking handle.

Nice silver finds! You should give your card/phone number to that guy so he can let you know when he has more houses that you can detect.

Thanks Prober! Already done!

You should offer to scan every yard the guy has access to. Keep offering him some of the stuff you find, or let him use your spare detector and hunt with you!

He already invited me to detect his yard..his house is about 100 years old :o When my bones stop aching I'll be heading over there!

Way to go man! Sounds like you talked to the right guy and got into the right place. Ya might wanna look around for that truck once in awhile and see what kind of places they are doing work on.

Thanks Nash..I called him tonight to thank him..in one day he's become a valued contact.

Thanks everyone for all your continued support and encouragement..it was a good day!

Nice finds. Private yards are great. Never underestimate a home built in the 50's. They can really produce some good silver.

Congratulations sounds like a great hunt. Any multiple silver days would be awesome in my book. Very nice of you to give him a silver dime for allowing you to hunt.

I think your generosity cinched the deal for future md'in with your new found contact. A good example for us all to follow.

Nat,
My birth year is not in the silver range, so you can just send me ANY silver coin you want. ;)

Just kidding bud. What a great story and super hunt! You have had some awesome hunting. Love all those wheats too! Man I really like finding those, and of course, who doesn't like finding silver. Congrats on the Washington silver and Mercs too.

Super finds, Nat!

And a very good contact too!

Success on all fronts.

Enjoyed your post, Thanks for sharing.

Wow looks like I need to take a road trip and come hunting with you some time.

Those are great finds. I love the tag, and of course what can you say, silver is always good. And you have found more wheat pennies in one hunt than I have for the entire summer! I only have 12.

Just get permission to hunt some older yards and you may just have the luck I had yesterday..I've hunted 50's and 60's neighborhood yards around here for years (probably over 100 hours total search time) and this is the first Merc I've ever found in one..but if you check the right yard, I guess anything's possible.

These private yards have lots o'wheats..I've found 120 this year, the most I've ever found in one season.

Thanks again everyone for the nice compliments and replies, they really mean alot to me.
