Quartz

I went out to my quartz spot today. Didnt find any points yet there. Still cant quite get to my total spot yet. Found some scrapers but they are hard to get a clear pic so I wont post them. I did find this and was wondering if maybe its a core? it is flat on the side on my hand. Let me know.

Well this has been given an ID from Gatorboy to me as being a core. First one I have ever found in quartz. Thanks GB

That's the closest estimation I could make from the photo. Your welcome. I have Chert examples very similar. The knapper had to be pretty good to leave it looking that way.

Are you asking What a core is?
A core is not for anything other than taking flakes from to make points or tools and possibly something out of what's left. " a core for what" Are you just being facetious?

The first pic dont look like a core imo but im not in quartz land only found 3 pieces made from it.and i gave them away...

Let me explain to keep feelings from being hurt. Sorry the way that I wrote above. Im tired and wanted a quick point to be made. Quarts is usually if not always made from one nodule. Quartz is hard and hard to work with. They found a nodule near the size of what they were making flaked it and boom their is an artifact. Flakes left behind I have seen, quartz core, never in my life. What you have rock is a quartz cluster with mineral composites (the dark veins, minerals) now, I'm not perfect, and perhaps quartz cores exist, I bet they are few and far in between!!

I will show you a piece of raw quartz so you can get an image of what they had to work with from the area where I found this at. And yes if it is a core it is the first one I have ever found and that is why I posted it.

It just seems to me that cores would be left only from lithic that came in slabs, or large nodules. Try google. I can't find any info on quartz cores. I don't know how big a quartz nodule can be though. Guess I have some geology homework.

Thanks Gator. The piece in your pic, are you sure it isn't a hand axe/chopper? Looks like it, because one edge is left natural and smooth to protect the hand.

A lot of cores of every lithic show signs of being used as choppers. If you think about holding a stone in your lap or on a platform while striking you're probably going to want at least a small section to grab without cutting yourself.

Well the piece in question that I posted is strange cause it actually has layers removed as if they removed each piece at a angle just enough to make a tool or scraper from 3/4 of the way around. The part on my hand is flat and that is what I found strange about it. I have yet to find another one like it.
