Rodeo Recon and I got out for a bit today and I got skunked except for a few little buckles. (I deserve to get skunked after the recent successes I guess...) Anyhow, Rodeo got this awesome L&N R.R. lock. It says "7-19" on the lever. Congrats, Rodeo. I imagine this one will clean up nicely. If anybody has any ideas on how to get it working again, please feel free to share them. I know that any L&N key would potentially turn the lever.

Nice lock.
I boiled an old lock in water to get out the dirt
and then soaked it with liquid wrench to get it working.

Nice find and its looks in great shape. Should be a little old because its CSX now can't remember when the name was changed but its been a while.

The next time we get together remind me and I will bring my keys. There are a lot of different keys and if this one works I know a guy at the flea market that sells them.

Really great find,I knew it was going to be L&N when I saw your name. They are one of my favorite lines, some of their track is very near my home. or what used to be theirs,as a previous poster mentioned CSX bought them up years ago. I think I would let it soak in a coffee can with some motor oil in it for a week or two then get after it with the WD40 or liquid wrench, should turn out to be a sweety,HH...Shoot

Thank you for your replies. I'm hoping with some cleaning it will open and close again.

Nice find!

The latest edition of Knous's Railroadiana lists this Louisville & Nashville Railroad lock at $60-70. Arnall's The Padlock Collector values it at $100, but that may be a bit steep, as a couple (nonexcavated) came in below the Knous price range in Schofield padlock auctions.

The thrill of digging one? Priceless!

Very nice find, and locks are such a wonderful relic to have on display. I hope it cleaned up well and give you many years of viewing enjoyment.

:o Sweet find, congrats. I love to use the metal detector to add to my collections. I limited my railroad collection to L&N only. They hauled out the coal my Grandfather dug in Kentucky. That would be a priceless find for me.

That's a nice one Buckle boy.

The patina is great. I love that green. Some of those locks are worth some money. I found one last month pat 1879.
