Put another coin next to it for size reference WD. Many of these coins were holed so that's not a bad thing. Im guessing a 2 reale.....it looks to be smaller than an eight reale. WD that would inspire me to really search hard and redouble my efforts......theres treasure close by.

I don't know. I will have to take a screenshot and ask. I haven't talked to them since the tornado. It was found memorial day weekend.

Morning Sis,

it is a Reale from Carolus IIII, 1788-1808. The hole is not modern. This was done quite often to the smaller nominations. The stretched and bend area around the hole has same traces of circulation as the rest of the coin which does n´t comes from wearing it but from rubbing against other coins in a purse or money bag etc.
Do you have the weight of it?

Here are the weights

Silver

8 Reales: 27,2 Grams
4 Reales: 13.6 Grams
2 Reales: 6.8 Grams
1 Reales: 3.4 Grams
Half Reales: 1.7 Grams

Btw:Same weight for Gold Escudos from 8 down to 1 Escudos

) and I saw the single R on the reverse. It means that it is a half reale and it is a quite small coin in size of your thumbnail! All others have the number 1.2.4 or 8 in front of this R which stands for reales.

Can you read the last two numbers of the date? Seems the hole just goes through the first two.

With my little magnifying glass, we came up with 4 possible dates: 1772, 1777, 1822, or 1827. But I think that 1827 would be out of the production dates, right?

Naaaa.... they don´t see more as you! If the numbers are not to read, they also just can guess. But anyway, the name and reign of Carlos is clear (1788-1808) and also the nomination. So your neighbor knows what he found there :icon_thumright:
