So, I treasure hunt, not really in the dirt, but in thrift stores and such. They have become very educated in the area of whats worth a crap ton of money, and it stinks, but I found what I think might be a HUGE RUBY 7.1 carats, its clean but not completely clean. SO, I tried to figure out how to tell if its real. I read try scratching on a quartz, which i did, and it scratched the crap out of it. So by chance, the ruby is a Briolette or tear drop shape, think of a fancy chandelier with crystals hanging, the shape of those hanging crystals. So, by accident I was playing with my $15 eBay green laser pointer. I have a clear crystal I hang from a string and it shoots beams all over the room, so I decided to try it on my ruby... And wow! It turned SUPER bright red, but the laser beams were green again when they exited the stone View attachment 852804 View attachment 852804 ruby briolette 7 carats (1).JPG ruby briolette 7 carats (5).JPG ruby briolette 7 carats (9).JPG . Its pretty trippy or cool.. So, I tried with other red stones and glass I have, and nothing has produced the same effect... SO does anyone know if this is a valid easy test or not to tell weather or not a ruby is at least a ruby.. now natural or earth mined and synthetic, I am not sure how to tell of if the green laser can tell, but I figured this would be the place to come and see!

The only way to tell if its natural or synthetic is by having a gemologist work thier magic with some sort of machine that cost a fortune... soo... i may have it looked at, my luck, vaseline glass from the early 1900s the uranium in it makes it glow.. LOL..

Only way to tell if it's natural is putting it under magnification and having a good understanding of what you see.
Or sending it to a lab and get it certified, then you'll know for sure.

I think you're getting some kind of flouresence from the laser..?

Try a UV test. One of the easiest tests for a ruby. The ruby will emit a fluorescent glow under a UV light.

Specific gravity test is also a real easy way of identifying. Corundum is a dense mineral.

It is interesting I don't know if this is a proof test of rubies or not but it would help in the culling of fakes!!!
