Hey Gang,
Unexpected January thaw creates an opportunity to metal detect and I wasted no time! Hard to believe only 5 days ago I was snow blowing 6 inches of snow!
Sunday night I watched the weather report with anticipation. Monday, at 60 degrees, had to be the day as heavy rain was predicted for late Monday night through the whole day on Tuesday. Then, Wednesday would have a high temperature of only 37.
New batteries loaded in the M6 and the Ace 250; lesche sharpened; bullseye II ready and waiting. Three quarters of a tank in the Corolla; coffee cup in the holder; pouch, camera, cell phone and maps in hand...I was ready. Six thirty nine a.m. found me in the car heading down the road. A stop at McD's about 40 miles away provided sustenance for the long day ahead.
First I had to do an errand for the wife, then I was free to detect. Errand accomplished I headed towards the chosen town. On the way there I hit a park tot lot that I had detected back in late September.
The last time I detected this particular tot lot I arrived 1/2 hour before dark and had to hurry and only cherry picked the lot. This time I gave it the old college try. On the first signal a few inches down I pulled a 1953D Wheat Penny which was a nice surprise. Total coins for the lot: 5 quarters, 7 dimes, 5 nickels, 19 pennies and a silver colored bead. Not a stupendous haul by any stretch of the imagination, but you've got to remember for the last two months it was buried under as much as 8 inches of snow. The lack of great numbers of coins would be due to the lack of tots visiting the tot lot for quite a while. Oh well, it was fun anyway.
I had never been to the next town before so I didn't know what to expect. When the first tot lot produced nothing I began to wonder if I had picked the wrong town. For a tot lot to be picked that clean there had to be another treasure seeker around. Could only hit four more tot lots as school was still in session and I could only gaze longingly at the playgrounds filled with little losers of coins! Spring will come in a few months and I will be back, on a weekend. Here are a couple more tot lot pictures. An interesting note...at the first one I interrupted a young couple engaged in an ”oral” engagement. Had to back off, cough loudly a few times, and head in a different direction. A lady arrived with two rugrats about that time and I worried that they might stumble on the same scene. Not to worry as the couple were half way across the park heading for the picnic tables.
The second picture is of a tiny tot lot which only yielded two large cars, 1 dime and 4 pennies
It was now around 3 o'clock so I headed towards home. Driving along I spotted this tot lot from the road.
Another nearly cleaned out lot. A cigarette case, some fake teeth, 3 nickels and 1 penny. The liner was only covered with about two inches of chips and some signals were well below the liner. A few minutes after leaving this tot lot I noticed an elementary school with a nice playground. Two kids with a dog were playing nearby but posed no problem. It was getting close to dark so I was forced to hurry through the playground. By the time it got too dark to see I had found 2 quarters, 1 nickel and 16 pennies; not great, but worth stopping.
Here are the pictures of yesterdays finds (excluding 89 of the 90 pennies):
Today my back is killing me. BUT, I have 127 more coins than I had before I started and had a very enjoyable metal detecting adventure.
So much for the first hunt of 2008. I'll keep hoping for another thaw and have fresh batteries waiting. Ya'all have a good un.
Got out again for a couple hours on Thursday...its a good thing as its snowing today and the weatherman is saying the temperature will be in the low to mid teens this week and we are supposed to get a lot of lake effect snow tonight (I heard at least a foot)...GAG!
Anyway, I went to two tot lots in town. Didn't find a lot (only $1.84 in clad). Did manage to hit a signal under the ladder to the slide which netted me a flattened ring. As it is a costume piece I straightened it as best I could with my vise and a pair of pliers. Too bad it isn't real cuz the main stone is huge! Also found a broken heart thingy. Here's a picture of the meager findings. I'm hoping for another freak thaw like we had last week but not anticipating that to happen very soon. Get out while you can!
