I found this at an 1850's house in Ohio among mostly modern coins.

It appears to be a Roman faced coin fashioned into a homemade money clip.

I cannot see any thing on the back side but it is pretty crusted over.

Does anyone recognize this?

JUST POSTED CLEANED UP PICS.

Roman -ish , but I'm not convinced that it's purpose was a money clip ...curious to see what others think ?

The top part looks to be forged with the face of the round side with a pin through it. Reproduction perhaps...commemorative?

It is def. a reproduction, but still an a nice find.

Did the Romans even have paper currency to facilitate the need for a money clip? Interesting find anyway

Too round to be a real Roman coin...........IMO definately not a money clip.........but what it is?............I dunno! Still a nice find!

they didn't use paper, it was for holding their credit cards

I was thinking maybe someone welded the clip on but I believe I can see where it was forged one piece. Perhaps a souvenir from a museum?

Now that it seems to be modern reproduction I will get more aggressive with cleaning and post new pictures.

Does anyone know if the inscription refers to anything in particular?

Still a nice find!

Faux Roman coins have been used for quite a while in Fashion jewelry and accessories - this could have been a brand icon for some
piece of luggage , or a fashion belt - perhaps an ornament for a child's book strap - I'm a little reminded of those inserts on the side of saw handles - I'm obviously grasping at straws and I'm all over the place , but that's what I like about this site !

It's a Coin Button, not made from a coin but fashioned that way. They normally have a loop on the back, but this one looks a later type, to the normal Victorian Type....Cool find.
