Roman Siliqua Silver cut half & medieval finds

This is my first post for quite awhile even though I have been out detecting the finds have been few and far between, so on sunday I gave my search lands a rest and went out on an organized dig. I don't usually bother going on these digs as they can get quite repetitive going back to the same place time and again but I new the area they were going was a good bet having lots of Roman and Anglo Saxon. First decent find was a George1V 1820-30 penny the first coin I have ever had of this king in quite decent condition, the Silver cut half penny popped out next I think it is a Henry111 1216-72 ). By the way the weather was abysmal sleet rain cold wind you name it we got it, on the afternoon I winkled out a couple of nice Medieval finds a 14 century buckle still with pin and a nice Medieval casket key,OH almost forgot the prize of the day Roman Siliqua of Julian11 ad 355-360 I think the reverse says votis v mvltis in laural wreath no idea what that might meen but I am quite sure Crusader does, enough talk here's the pictures ::)

Re: Roman Siliqua Silver cut half & medieval finds

Votis V Mvltis X: Is a brief way of saying that the Emperor has renewed or accomplished his inaugural vow ('votis') 5 ("V") times; i.e. he has enjoyed the title of Emperor, or Caesar, for 5 years and it is hoped he will complete at least as many as ten ("X") years in this position.

Outstanding finds !! Keep up the good work.God Bless and hh..Panz

Re: Roman Siliqua Silver cut half & medieval finds

Really nice coins, especially the half. 14th century buckle looks like the kind of thin you just can't stop handling.

But..... I'm working late and it kind of depressed me to know I have absolutely no shot of finding any of these items.

Re: Roman Siliqua Silver cut half & medieval finds

Awesome finds! I was just looking at my buckle book the other day and saw that buckle, I posted it to a forum friend as an example. A big congrats and HH, Mike

Re: Roman Siliqua Silver cut half & medieval finds

Thanks Mike I now have two buckles of that type ;)

Re: Roman Siliqua Silver cut half & medieval finds

Looks like an outstanding day. Clearly the Roman Silver is my fav, I believe these types were primarily used for payment of soldiers. Can you see the letters on the bottom (on the rev.) for the mint?

I wish I still had ground which produced like that at this time of year :(

Re: Roman Siliqua Silver cut half & medieval finds

Amazing. I'm going to have to pack up my gear and hop over the pond someday soon. I was there in May but came as a tourist only. :-(

Congrats on the great finds!

Cheers,
B

Re: Roman Siliqua Silver cut half & medieval finds

I agree with Crusader: If the letters (some or all) can be identified underneath the reverse wreath, we'd have a change to better ID the coin by that mint mark.

Three letters middle letter is V right letter looks like S can't make out outher letter :'(

Re: Roman Siliqua Silver cut half & medieval finds

Tyre:

Three-letter mint mark combinations with "V" as the middle letter include:
AVG: Londinium (London)
CVZ: Cyzicus (Turkey)
KVZ: Cyzicus
LVG: (London)
Since you found the coin in GB, I'll go way out on a limb and suggest the coin was minted in Londinium.
My concern is you believe the date is between 355 and 360 AD, yet I believe the Londinium (Roman) mint was opened only during two periods: 287-325 AD and 383-388 AD.
Crusader: Your expertise here would be appreciated.
Don.....

Here's another three with V Don, LVGPS (Lugdunum, France) RVPS (Ravena Italy) VRB (Rome Italy) if the coin is as I say Julian11 then the date of 355-360 is correct :P

Re: Roman Siliqua Silver cut half & medieval finds

Yes, Tyre, there are more with the V letter; I was honing in on what you had written: three and only three letters in the mint mark.

Re: Roman Siliqua Silver cut half & medieval finds

I think it is actually LVG for Lugdunum which was Lyon France. That ties in with the siliqua VOT V MVLTIS X type of Julian II AD 360-363 as Augustus and should weigh c 2.2 gm. It is therefore like Sears 4071 (although that is a DN CL IVLIANVS AVG)

Re: Roman Siliqua Silver cut half & medieval finds

Crusader:
I didn't list Lugdunum as a potential mint since I'm under the impression that mint's marks were only LVGD and LVGPS; and each of four letters instead of three.

Don.......

I have emailed gunner who has better reference books than myself & we should have a solution pretty soon ;D

At least it not a common variant :)
