Roman Siliqua Silver cut half & medieval finds

This is my first post for quite awhile even though I have been out detecting the finds have been few and far between, so on sunday I gave my search lands a rest and went out on an organized dig. I don't usually bother going on these digs as they can get quite repetitive going back to the same place time and again but I new the area they were going was a good bet having lots of Roman and Anglo Saxon. First decent find was a George1V 1820-30 penny the first coin I have ever had of this king in quite decent condition, the Silver cut half penny popped out next I think it is a Henry111 1216-72 ). By the way the weather was abysmal sleet rain cold wind you name it we got it, on the afternoon I winkled out a couple of nice Medieval finds a 14 century buckle still with pin and a nice Medieval casket key,OH almost forgot the prize of the day Roman Siliqua of Julian11 ad 355-360 I think the reverse says votis v mvltis in laural wreath no idea what that might meen but I am quite sure Crusader does, enough talk here's the pictures ::)

I think it is actually LVG for Lugdunum which was Lyon France. That ties in with the siliqua VOT V MVLTIS X type of Julian II AD 360-363 as Augustus and should weigh c 2.2 gm. It is therefore like Sears 4071 (although that is a DN CL IVLIANVS AVG)
LGV LVGD LVGPS are all lugdunum (Lyon France) :-*

Re: Roman Siliqua Silver cut half & medieval finds

Thanks, guys. I stand corrected. The source I was using:
http://www.time-lines.co.uk/erol.html#1X0
lists the mint mark 'LVG' as from Londinium (London) when clearly-after looking on other sites--that mint mark is from Lugdunum (Lyons).
Don.......

Very nice finds. ;)

"I Vow to serve 5 years (V), and I will serve another 10 beyond that (X)".. Does that help Sir? :)

LVC is the exergue..it is Lyons France.

Gunner thanks for looking at this but are you sure LVC is Lyons France my source does not list LVC but does list LGV :-\

Re: Roman Siliqua Silver cut half & medieval finds

My apologies, the exergue actually reads LVG and Crusader is absolutely correct. Here is an example of your coin and full attribution:

Julian II AR Siliqua (Exceptionally good quality silver on your example btw)

R.I.C. 219, Cohen 163

Lugdunum Mint (Modern Lyon France)

Re: Roman Siliqua Silver cut half & medieval finds

Another thing I just noticed about your coin which makes it even more interesting. I believe it is a fouree (Plated Silver bronze coin). Fouree Siliquae are extremely rare and I have only seen 2 (I own one of them). My coin was found in England. Was your coin found in England? I can see the silver flaked off of both sides of the coin on the high points with bronze showing through. I'd love to know the geographic location where you found it as I know approximately where mine was found.

The second picture I have attached is my Constantius II Siliqua from Lugdunum. This coin is solid silver. Note the differences on the high points of the coin as compared to our fouree siliquae.
