Greetings, here is a news item from an email so I'm not sure just when it
happened.

Rules are Rules

The Good News: It was a normal day inSharon Springs, Kansas, when a
Union Pacific crew boarded a loaded coal train for the long trek to Salina.

The Bad News: Just a few miles into the trip, a wheel bearing became
overheated and melted, letting a metal support drop down and grind on
the rail, creating white-hot molten metal droppings spewing down to the
rail.

The Good News: A very alert crew noticed smoke about halfway back in
the train and immediately stopped the train, in compliance with the rules.

The Bad News: The train stopped with the white-hot wheel over a wooden
bridge with creosote ties and trusses.

The Good News: The crew tried to explain to 'higher-ups', but were
instructed not to move the train!

The Bad news" They were instructed,' Rules prohibit moving the train
when a part is defective! Remember-

RULES ARE RULES!

(Don't ever let common sense get in the way of a good disaster!)

OK, you are right, tee. I see your point. I probably shouldn't have put this
one on. But check it tomorrow. I have one that is unique and you will
probably like, that I am getting ready to post tomorrow. It's starting to
get a little late and I have to get up very early in the morning so I am
about ready to sign off for the night.

My rain dances do not work very good so I'll have to pray for your rain. LOL.

Yup, Chug, If they had just broke the rules a little, they would have saved all of them lots of hassel and money to say the least. LOL.

Yeah, Tee, that is terrible. My heart goes out to them. It would have to be
so awful to lose everything that way. And to see it coming and nothing you
can do to really stop it.

according to my research, this happened in 2002, on a trip from Denver to Chicago. the car did have a bearing go out and when it did, it derailed that car. the crew stopped the train to check it out, by the time they got back to the car, a half mile back, the tressle was already on fire, they then unhooked six cars in front of it and left the rest. this accident didn't have anything to do with rules. these were the last 6 cars on the train. you can't see it from the picture but the rest of the train was moved to the right, away from the damaged car and fire

Wow, Sniffer that is quite a story. That was nice of you to look it up and share
it on here with the correct way it happened. It shows how emails can mix things
up.

I didn't doubt it, I just wanted the whole story. so I looked it up. usually, unless there is major amount of private property damage or loss of life, the RR doesn't like this kind of publicity

remember "they" aren't there - so "they" got no clue whats going on -- for gods sake -- use your common sense man --if that bridge gives way the the whole flipping train is going to crash any tanks of chemicals on that train are liable to explode * do what you need to do to stop the disaster ---then tell "them" what you like"happened" - they gotta believe you because they weren't there. -- yep thats what happened , (prove differant).

Yup, Sniffer, I understand you. Also can see why the RR doesn't like this
kind of publicity. LOL.

Agreed, Ivan, I was thinking about the same thing while typing it up. And
in the write-up they said it was in the middle of the train, while the picture
looks like the end of it. That would account for the cars that were moved
farther on down, out of harm's way. They should have been getting it
off the bridge while or before calling the company.
