Scoops help

After several years of no detecting, I am ready to hit the water again. My last water scoop was a Stainless 6" travel scoop with 5/8th inch holes made by and bought through Treasure Coast Scoops. I was considering another like it, but am wondering about getting something similar in aluminum because of the weight difference. Since some of the places I hunt have rocky bottoms, I am wondering how well aluminum would hold up. Are any similar scoops made of aircraft aluminum? Comments as well as suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Aluminum for the sand-SS for the rocks. One company puts a SS lip on one of their aluminum scoops but I don't know how well they hold up

I use a scoop made by sunspot. They use to call it The Scoop. It is almost understructable. It is still made by them. It is heavy stainless steel with a wood oat handle. I put a aluninum handle on mine. Works great and i have tried a lot of others. Mike

First off, aluminum that is heavy gauge works well, I know several people who have had them for years and they are holding up very well. Stainless is a bit heavier but will definately last longer if you are in really nasty territory, ie hunking rocks and stuff a lot.

#2 screw the hand scoop. TRUST ME, especially if you are in coquina and hard pack, why bend over and hammer hammer pound dig dig to get a hole dug, putting all the stress on your knees and wrists to dig a hole when the sand is not soft. Get a scoop that is on a pole / stick / whatever you want to call it. Once you get one you will never go back. Especially if you are older like me and have knee / back / ankle / wrist problems. Stick the scoop down, and let your weight do the work, stick it in the sand and rock it back and forth while either stepping or halfway standing on it, and the scoop does the rest. Pop it out, thump it, dump a wad out of it, swing, no beep, dump another wad, swing no beep, dump another wad.. or dump it all and cut in half a few times then snatch your find up with the scoop bring it up to your waist and pick out your coin. NO bending.

Its quick to learn and you will do a lot less work with it. Just drag it behind you. I have a heavy duty aluminum one, sorry I do not know the brand name, a friend picked it up for me at the daytona shootout earlier this year and it works like a champ.

Good advice above. Believe me get the biggest, best scoop you can find. It will cost you, but your only going to buy it once if you do it right.

My first scoop was a $50 one from Kellyco. I thought $50 was a lot for a scoop and that it would work. I snapped the handle the first month. I repaired it but I never felt I could trust it again. The last thing I want to do is be a mile from my truck in waist deep water and have it break again.

I have the beach brute now, bought it used, it is like a backhoe, and I have no fear of breaking it. Just my own opinion, but if your going to spend much time water hunting bite the bullet and get the biggest, best scoop you can. A good scoop is worth it's weight in gold when your chest deep in water trying to recover a target before the next big wave hits you.

I use the Sunspot scoop, it is perfect for my needs. It may be a little heavier than you would like, but it definitely can handle the tough areas.

Heaver is more durable. Mine weighs 6 lbs, and heavy also means it is intimidating if used as a defensive weapon on land sharks.

Thanks everyone. I believe that I will stick to getting a heavy duty stainless scoop, similar to what I had before. Now I can't wait till the CZ-21 comes out so that I can get one of those! Really miss the CZ-20 that I sold 3 years ago.

There is a scoop called the ath water shark it is a great scoop for the water. Check it out for the surf I love it. I think dixie carries it

A while back I was asking a question about scoops. Finally found one I was interested in and won a bid on Ebay on a new, all stainless, 6", long handled scoop. I had actually hoped to get a travel scoop, but this will do as I got such a great deal and the thing is built like a tank! I know that the guy has a few more up for auction right now. I am in NO WAY affiliated with this manufacturer of scoops! I just got such a good deal that I thought I'd pass the information on to others that are looking for a high quality scoop to use in the water.
