Seated Dime From "The Park" in San Francisco!!!

Had a awesome day in "The Park" in San Francisco! Scored 4 silver dimes in a gopher infested area. Dug
my first seated coin for the year. It's a 1861-S! Mintage only 174,000! It was only a couple of inches deep! It was a few feet away from a very large and old tree. The seated dime came out of the ground black as coal, used some silver polish to get it to look a little better. Also dug 12 wheat pennies, a Good Year Blimp medalion, S.F. bus token, soccer pin, and a medal.

PLEASE !!!!! Never again even think the words "used a little silver polish to get it to look better". Makes my skin crawl worse than nails on a black board except sliver polish is permanent.

That said, love the goodyear medallion.

Awesome finds! I wish I would have "Used a little silver polish" on a Merc that I found over the weekend or at least a baking soda bath. It also came out black as coal and I did a short electrolysis on it and fried it......it came out bubbly and some of the silver was flaking off, totally sucks but your coin looks great! Sorry for the venting....

I almost never clean my silver coins, but the black coating of oxidation made the coin look pretty bad. Any dug silver coin in that kind of condition is not worth that much anyway. you must admit it does look a little better cleaned than keeping it black.

Re: Seated Dime From "The Park" in San Francisco!!!

Great finds, I've done the same with the silver polish but I figure I'm never going to sell the coins I find unless they're worth what that seated could be worth. Way to much time involved and I seem to have a huge attachment to my finds. Congrats!!

:o Very nice finds! I like the token & Goodyear Blimp thing

I could go either way in regards to the cleaning but the coin aficionados on here will give you hell about it

So rule of thumb, cleaning your old coins is a no-no

Since I started this cleaning debate, I thought I would add a little more. Have you had a chance to check general values, like red book? (Sorry I couldn't help, out of town on vacation) But something with 160 odd thousand minted should have some major value, just as a guess. What is a 16-D Merc---950,000? There are professional conservers that, if the coin is worth it, could improve it's looks in a professional, and accepted manner. Although I had a 18-D buffalo (not 18/18 but still somewhat of a key coin) that they failed on. Silver should be easier to conserve. Even if you are not planning on selling it (I probably never would), it is still a good thing to keep as much value as possible.

I checked the Red Book immediately after finding out what the date and mint mark were.

Red Book 2010 Values:
Good: $ 40.00
Fine: $ 110.00
Very Fine: $200.00
Extremely Fine: $ 600.00

The problem occurs when the coin is sent in to be professionally graded. A grading service like PCGS or any of the others would have graded a coin like this as "environmentally damaged". So either way cleaned or not cleaned it would have not been graded by any of the grading services. Coin collectors are very picky, a coin with the extreme oxidation like mine would have been difficult to sell even listed as in good condition.

I am sorely disappointed in those values for a mintage of 174,000. Far more spectacular than the prices indicate. You are right, probably wouldn't have paid for conserving and certification. A real shame.
