semi out of commission :(

hmm you made me look at the calendar I almost forgot I'll be 59 on june 14th.

doctor told me i should have an operation or may need to wear a brace.
add to that good chances of arthritis if i dont get operation.

down fall if i get the operation, risk of blood clots , heart attack, infections , etc.

i think the brace will be the least worrysome

but may end things for me getting down to dig and back up again :(

They told me the same thing in 98', when I slipped on ice, slid half way under the truck, looked at my right foot that was laying flat pointing in at my left one, and said "that can't be good".

It wasn't, tore the ligament and a piece of bone off. Trying to stand on anything broken is a pain like no other! 6 weeks with my ankle in a cast, had to use a walker I have bad balance, I would have broke something else on crutches.

It did take a full year before my ankle felt normal, but I did get around ok, just sore.

You'll be fine just takes time for the body to heal it's self.
I didn't want surgery, no ins. At the time. Never developed arthritis in my ankle, but I have it in my knees, go figure!

Drink your milk, wiggle your toes if doc says it ok, keeps blood pump'n, heals you quicker.

Get well sooooooon Jeff!

Jeff,
Been there and it ain't easy! Sit back in your recliner and just take it one day at a time and one step at a time. Think of the positives: 1. You have more time to read the posts and respond! 2. All of us will be detecting in order to keep the weight off of your foot. 3. You have more time to watch re-runs of Diggers! Get better!

Get well soon..to all of you guys!

Thank You all ! For the Well wishes & the Comedy Relief :tongue3:

Yesterday My Nephew took me out to the Bone specialist .

He took off the Half Cast, did More xrays,
gave me the same lecture on needing surgery.
(because if he didn't he felt he could be open to law suits :tongue3: )

then Wrapped it in more ace type Bandages

And set up an appt. for the 18th, To get a Fracture Boot put on
so I can walk on it already

I couldn't see the fracture Myself on the Xray but from where my nephew pointed,
I think it is a very low break

But at least with the Boot I should be able to prevent the Muscles in my ankle from taking a
long vacation.

Swelling has not gone down yet

not chewing gum but definitely thinking and walking at the same time :tongue3:

as far as what the dr told me, i already flubbed that a few times.
using the foot to catch my balance :(

he said absolutely no weight :(
but whatta ya gonna do, I'm no expert on crutches & 200 pounds on the other ankle is definately straining that one :o

I would think about getting one of those wheeled stools that you kneel on. People seems to be able to get around better on those than on crutches.

Dang getting old is hell! I'm sorry you got hurt Jeff and that you heal up fast hopefully without surgery.

I'm actually using 2 Computer chairs for most of My Movements.

doing so is Rough on My Carpets , Causing Wrinkles, and their pulling up
from the Floor in spots.

Add to that Plastic wheels On computer chairs are Subject to break at any time :(

But so far so good.

I have people looking for bar stools for me,
Which would improve my ability to Do dishes & Cook at the stove,
but so far they have become rare here.

I already decided I won't accept Surgery for anything unless I'm on my Death bed.

And even then wonder would it be worth Lying on my back being Treated Like a baby for any
extended Time :(

Get a 2nd opinion.... I passed up surgery on my shoulder when they told me it was possible I could end up with a frozen shoulder from surgery..

American by birth, Patriot by choice.

I would rather die standing on my two feet defending our Constitution than live a lifetime on my knees......

Yea I actually was my 2nd. opinion. :laughing7:

I think Surgeons are like Pilots. need so many Hours plying their craft

You are in the system.

The problem lies in that you healing from your injury does not profit them at all .
They are expected to earn far too much money.
They no longer have the capacity to think the way they did in medical school like normal people.

It is simply not possible for them to operate on a small scale. Their infrastructure is huge and they are expected to support entire peripheral industries.
Every dentist or doctor I have ever had in the US was motivated by his crippling overhead, mortgage and his Porsche payment....
Even the best doctors have been subliminally taught to turn your injury / ailment / condition into a recurring profit center.

Whoa, take it easy, and heal fast Jeff!

Hey Jeff... Damn I sure wish ya the best guy and I'm NOT trying to scare ya here at all. Buddy when I twisted my ankle playing basketball (73') I felt... and everybody HEARD the bone break around me. This happened in a real small town in central Missouri with me working a minimum wage job. But the broken bone was the least of my problems I learned later. It was the ligament's and muscles that took the blunt of the injury. And probably like you my ankle SWELLED up horribly. REAL BAD. I was put into some type wrapped up splint that day and told to come back in 6 weeks. When I came back the swelling had gone done about 50% but still badly swollen. Doc re-x-rayed. Then came in with 2 nurses who "comforted me". He grabbed my toes and heel and re-broke / set my ankle bone with one quick move. I never once got a "shot", pill or told what was about to happen. Man that hurt!!! Come back in 4 weeks and get 1st cast. As the swelling went down I'd get another cast (3 total). When the last cast came off 6 months later it took forever for the ligament's and muscles to get stretched out without hurting.

So Jeff... I don't know your exact condition but that's why I suggested earlier that if you can move the ankle's muscles and ligament's up to your pain threshold. Ligament's heal very slowly so don't push yourself buddy and get it right this first time. I did mine 40 years ago and the injured ankle is "weak" compared to the other.

Well Jeff since we can't "keep" you out of trouble, we'll just have to stay on your case till your well!

Here goes!--- I'm glad you can heal with out surgery!

Keep get'n your daily calcium, and wiggling your toes.
If your ankle is still swollen try cutting back on your salt intake that should help bring the swelling down some.
I'm guessing your on some type of over the counter pain med. hopefully it also reduces swelling.

If your nephew will, have him massage your toes if they are sticking out of ace wrap, nothing rough, just soothing stokes, helps to increase blood flow (he may never get over it, but oh we'll he's family)!

I hope you are trying to eat healthy right now, your body needs it to heal faster.
When you get to start walking on it, for the love of Pete, Don 't Over Do It!

They told me I would have my cast on 6-8 weeks, it was 6. After the first two weeks they took off the first cast which had my toes pointed downward in a natural position and put on a walking cast, well, after not moving those muscles for two weeks when they bent my foot up I could tell you where every muscle was from my calf up my gluteus Maximus! Like Limitool said "no warning ". Then they put the walking cast on. It was my right ankle couldn't drive, bummer!

So you take care and stay out of trouble, no dancing, foot races, etc. Don't make all of us rent a party bus to come over there and check on you. :occasion14: :tongue3: :laughing7:

dangnabbitt !!! hope you get better soon. I'm probably out for the season myself. sucks!! I guess I'll have to sit on my butt and fish all summer. but no MDing crud!

Surgery is always a last resort! The body can heal most things if you eat right and exercise. Lets see I have had 3 back operations. Hay the pain exceeded the capacity of the painkillers. The last one was about 31 years ago. I am going in at the end of this month for a lens replacement in one eye. Hay, you got to see those targets.
Well Jeff, how long do you think you will be out of the game? Frank...-

I don't know Frank :( I'm hoping the weekend after they put the Fracture Boot on I
can get out detecting, but you know how that goes.

unfortunately from everything I'm reading here, May be the spring of 2015 if that ever happens :(

Only good thing about this, been raining all week here,
& I just threw a Hoodie on. Feels like winter here,
So too Cold & Damp to be out anyway.
May dip in the low 50's upper 40's next few nights :(
