Today I started out on a dry site that has given very little in the past, and it continued to do that today, so I left. Then I hit a site in town that has been giving up some pretty good relics from colonial up to pre-Civil war. The trend continued today and I found some outstanding things. My favorite find of the day was an EARLY 2 piece button. It appears British in manufacture, and is stamped "Treble Standard Extra Rich." The funny thing about this two piece button is that it came up in TEN PIECES. I got a deep coin signal, and I dug a large plug as always. Near the bottom of my plug was the biggest button I have ever dug that was not a flat button, and it was obviously broken long ago, but all the pieces were matted together in thick red clay. This is going to be my first attempt at a button restoration. The button looks like it is from the 1830s-1840s. The other button I found was a "Leavenworth & Co Fine Gold Surface" and it is a one piece flat button. The name stands out like no other flat button I have ever found. The gold contrasts the background so it is very clear to read. An interesting fact about Leavenworth is that he partnered with Scovill in 1811ish. The partnership did not last long but that explains the quality of the button. This flat button I would estimate to be from the 1820s. I found a colonial barrel spigot. This is my 3rd one of these, and it is in pretty poor condition. I found a heavy duty oil lamp wick mount that is missing the wick turner. I think it is super old because it is so thick and did not crumble like most do. The chain I found is just something random I dug but it is obviously of the time frame I was searching for. The last neat item I dug was an old hand forged iron key. It is pretty terrible but it is my first iron key.

Looks very interesting- can you give us some details about each item?

Ain't no doubt that your in the right spot!!!

Stand by stonewall that is what I am working on now :unhappysmiley:

The once nice hunts button is circa 1850, good luck fixing it.

Few diggers realize this, but that little brass chain is likely the chain from a stud-type spur. They went from the strap box stud around the boot.

Regards,

Buck

Yep,used as curb chains as well

I like your idea. My chain has two links in one so it was likely a curb chain. Here is a picture of the bit, with the section that I found beside the one I dug:

Also thanks Crusader for your input on the button. I wish I knew more about it. I love finding items that showed a bit of the character of the person that lost them.
