She tried to hide but I found her....

I had a new idea about the weird target behavior in my iron infested mineralized soil, changed my rules a bit on what to look for and what to dig and it worked!
This was in a heavily scoured private lawn I have been hunting for over a year where I am sure I got this not so great signal before but dismissed it...those days are over.
This will open up my especially challenging sites a bit more, I think.

The coin was at about 5", the hole I dug was small no more than 3" wide.
She had two buddies down there with her, close to her, protecting her, hiding her.
Under my old rules it worked well for them, under my new rules it didn't and won't anymore.

This is why I constantly mess with settings, experiment and try to learn new things about target behavior...you never know what can lead you to the promised land until you try.
I wasn't too bad at this stuff before but yesterday I got a little better.

Congrats on pulling the Merc with your new technique digger27. There are many permissions I go back to and grid in a different direction and pull more keepers. Sometimes just using 5"DD gives me enough separation to hear targets that were previously masked while using larger coils.

Awesome recovery. It's the best feeling when you pull a silver coin out from in between big iron like that. I hit one this weekend too - a 1944 Merc in a heavily hunted park. The signal didn't sound perfect but I took a shot at it - out came a big iron bolt, and then in the same hole came the Merc!

Congrats! Nice find!
Good idea to try some new things out.
I will dig an iffy signal, heck sometimes I did every beep I hear! :laughing7:

Congrats on the Merc! Just like the saying goes, "No place is ever completely hunted out!"

I learned about how iron can mask a Silver Coin when I first started using my Etrac a few years back. Nothing like seeing a Silver alongside an old rusted nail. Congrats on bringing that Mercury to the surface.
