SHERRYs THREAD - My Gold Prospecting Journey

That'll just about cover the gas for EF road Sherry. Good Luck up there.

If you think the coins were fun ,just wait until you hit your first nugget. G/L

Well my clean out from last weekend was kind of weak but, at least I got something!!! The grey on the right is Mercury covered gold.

Awesome. What are you using to take pictures? That photo of your gold is perfect!

Sherry Thanks for posting, gold is always beautiful no matter what the size or how much. I like the angular piece on the left side.

If only to find the source....

The source is up with these guys

So here's a pic from this past Saturday using the hand dredge I made. I got just an ok amount of color using my friends CalSluice.

Those dark pieces don't look mercury covered to me, I think it may be a different coating. Have you tried soaking them in vinegar or scoring them with a knife?

Nah! I haven't done anything with any of it because I dont have enough of it to fuss with... I'm not even taking the time to separate it, it just all goes in the same vial if it's mixed. I'd rather concentrate on learning how to find gold; then when I get enough, I'll worry about it then. ;-)

do you just keep working the same river, that's probably why your only getting what your getting

Kiddo, thanks for the tip but the closest place to me, which is where I prospect, is 1.5 hrs away. So, unless I strike it rich or win the lottery, it's my only choice right now. This river has good gold it's just that "Gold is where you find it!" ;-) the East Fork of the San Gabriel River was mined hard in the 1800's and early 1900's in which they used a lot of mercury to recover the gold: so, we get a lot of that with the new gold. However, our river recently had a flood from a non-goldbearing canyon and it brought down a lot of overburden, about 3-4 feet in most areas, so it's just time consuming to get down past that to get back to the gold. I had dug my good hole down about 4 feet and was hitting a slope of bedrock when the flood happened. It completely filled in my hole and added 3 foot on top of it so now it's 7 foot of digging down which would certainly take me quite a while sense I mostly prospect alone alone. It's especially much harder with all of the big boulders that it brought down too!

have you tried the SoCal dessert, there might be some nice gold there if you can buy or build a recirculating system

Sherry I find it hard to believe with all that southern charm that you possess you can't just talk a passerby into digging you a 7 foot hole.
