Metal Detecting
Hello everyone:

Call me Les.

For many years now, I have owned metal detectors. Right now I own four. All my life I have heard about dowsing but I wasn't really familiar with it from personal experience. In fact, I was somewhat of a skeptic about it.

A couple of years ago I was talking with my Rancher Cousin in southern Utah. He told me he had dowsed for water for his ranch. He told the driller where to drill and that they would hit water at about 70 feet. They hit moisture at 70’ and full flowing water at 90’. That was almost 20 years ago and that well is still flowing water today.

He explained it with such conviction and certainty that I became curious about dowsing. So I bought a couple of brass rods from the hardware store and made some dowsing rods. After all, the water tasted good too and I needed to find out for myself.

To my utmost astonishment and surprise, when my rods crossed, I found a metal target in the ground. I continued dowsing and found all kinds of things. Most were trash items with a few coins along the way. However, the undeniable change dowsing brought was the speed to an unseen target. Using only my metal detector, in most cases it would have taken and extremely long time to finally get the coil over the target, if indeed I happen to do that.

I have dowsed over 300 times now and have had phenomenal success in finding targets.

I first dowse to a target then when my rods cross, I pinpoint it with my metal detector. What I am saying is you really should try it for yourself to see how it works for you. Like myself, it could get you to targets much faster than trying to overlap a detector coil over a large area so as not to miss anything. Dowsing is simply another tool you can use.

Now, there are skeptics who will challenge you along the way and that's OK. Just remember, you would be doing it for yourself and no one else.

Below is a picture of my latest find that I found in my back yard. It's a 27” L X ½” D piece of scrap main power electrical line. It was about 45’ from where I started dowsing and about 1” deep in the ground. This find, being aluminum, in and of itself is not worth much, but like all other finds while dowsing, it is very significant in that it was found while I was dowsing.

I will be posting other finds as time goes on.

Hi again, lesjcbs ! I've been following your thread and thinking about dowsing. Since my adult son and I trade our sole detector back and forth every two weeks, I get itchy to detect during the weeks that I don't have a detector! So --- I'm gonna start dowsing the sandy beach during those weeks! Compared to beaches in warm areas, our large cold-water beach attracts less people, so fewer goodies are found here when detecting. Maybe the dowser will speed things up for me! First, I'll have my son "salt" the beach with a few coins to test out my dowsing skills! We have a pinpointer coming in the mail, so will try that along with the dowser. Since the ranchers where I lived in arid New Mexico find water dowsing, maybe I can find pretty jewelry under the sand here in California! So far with the detector, have found nice silver & turquoise pendent in the sand. Andi

All of you dowsing people are living in la-la land  Dowsing CANNOT find anything!!! Yes, some folks will come across water, coins & a multitude of other items when dowsing. However, NOT because dowsing works. Rather, because if anyone goes around digging enough holes, sooner or later you're going to find something :sign13:

If dowsing was true, why don't all of you believers just quit your jobs, walk around with a coat hanger all day & get filthy rich? :laughing9: :laughing7:

I've always been somewhat skeptical, but my father needed a well drilled, he hired a driller to come put one in. The guy drilled two wells over 100' deep without hitting water. My dad's neighbor came over to see what was going on. He asked for a metal clothes hanger and a pair of wire cutters. He proceeded to cut a pair of rods. He then took them and walked around the yard until they crossed. He marked the spot and continued moving around, everytime he came close to the original spot the rods would start moving. He claimed there what water down at 50'. The well driller didin't believe him, it was between the two dry wells. The neighbor said drill, and the driller did. At 40' he started getting water, at 50' is was perfect for a well.

If I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't have believed it...

njnydigger, no one I'v seen here claims to getting filthy rich. Suggestion: Why don't you take some of your detectors out of the closet and get rich? If you took four of them to the pawn shop you could afford batteries for the other.

Are you serious?! Comparing a proven scientific tool - a metal detector - against something fashioned out of a coat hanger??? Don't know what state of mind you live in, but, must be an awfully nice place with plenty of open space & privacy

Tell you what, anytime you're up for the challenge, I'll take my metal detector & you take your coat hanger/dowsing rod :laughing9: and let's look for coins, relics & jewelry head-to-head. Whom do you think would come out the victor? Hmmmmmmm...

You probably own one of those helmets made of tin foil that allow you to listen in on alien aircraft too, right?

i bought some dowsing rods and on the package it said to find metal just hold a metal object in your hand similar to the one you are looking for, maybe if your wearing a gold ring that could be the reason you are finding the metal objects instead of water, i thought of trying this metal finding technique out but never got around to it, i will have to give it a go some time because i tried this technique out with someone holding both closed hands out and it always crossed over the closed hand with the coin but only when i was holding another coin. i don't know if it was just me knowing what hand to cross over or it could have been just a coincident but these have been used for centurys so who knows :dontknow:

Why is it that the skeptics are so adamant about it they almost seem offended. If you believe in nothing then what is there to offend you?

Just like a scientist, I go by FACTUAL INFORMATION. Science. Proof. Concrete logistics. Not something that only works some of the time, on certain nights when there's a full moon & high tide or when the elements are just right. There is absolutely NO hard science behind dowsing. I take no offense from people who believe. What I DO take offense to are folks who put out information stating that this stuff actually works. Someone can bury a signed coin in a twenty square foot area devoid of any other targets, I can turn on my metal detector & find it within a few seconds. I challenge ANYBODY to perform this feat through dowsing. Nuff said

I have used it for water, and it worked.

It doesnt for everyone. My younger brother wasnt able to do anything with it!!!!

Have never used it for metal, but, I am going to give it a shot!!!!!!

Arent the scientist the ones that say man can change to world climate. That alone is enough for me!!!!!

:laughing9: olroy

It absolutely does work. :headbang: I also was a skeptic until I tried it. I have a pastor friend who is very good at it. He even flew to the Dominican Republic to help a missionary find a well/water source. He was successful. You can use just about any tree limbs (small ones), even coat hangers though there are specialty rods made. Also, I've heard peach and willow branches work best, as far as trees go.

I have heard that for some folks, due to electric charges in their body, it doesn't work. But it does for me. I've thought about using in in conjunction w/my metal detecting. This post gives me more reason to do so.

Thanks for posting.

If dowsing worked so well... why is this piece of wire the only thing ever posted in Today's Finds by a dowser?

Also notable, is this particular dowser uses a metal detector to "pin point" (find/locate) targets. About the same as every other metal detectorist. :dontknow:
???

Why the hell doe's this get so many replies, when hard earned finds get so little ???

I was once a man of "hard science" and i understand your point of view. But I have SEEN things that changed my mind. Not dowsing related though.

Ninnyjigger, you said it. Never tried it, but it's baloney. Do you realize how stupid you sound? Then you go on personal attacks. No one attacks you for being an obama lovin yankee. So why arn't you filthy rich with your seven detectors. Before detectors, before electricity, people did things a little different. I'll tell you what..primidona...get two coathangers. Straighten them out. Put a 90 deg. bend (like a pistol grip). hold your elbows at your side with the hangers pointing straight ahead. Close your eyes (much like you do your mind) and walk foreward. If you like most people, that is the direction away from your ass. Now, while your eyes are still closed, have someone lay a shovel in front of you. mmmmm the rods crossed didn't they? Dumb ass.

Hmmmmmmmm. You really ARE an arrogant one, huh? Amazing how you claim to know my politics, yet, I've never met you in my life :dontknow: Next you'll probably tell me my shoe size & the year of my car :laughing7: Just curious as you seem to believe in things without any proof or scientific reason, did you ask Santa Claus for your Christmas present yet? Did you leave your tooth (the one you had left) under your pillow for the tooth fairy too?? Make sure you have your eggs colored & hidden before the Easter bunny arrives also :laughing9:

P.S. - BTW, I think you meant prima donna, but, I won't go into spelling errors as there are too many to list

P.P.S. - I'd really ask Santa to bring you a set of 'Hooked on Phonics' if I were you :sign13:

Yes I am arrogant. You see, I have used this method and it works. You havn't tried it and it doesn't.
Now that's ignorant. Of course, thats part of your liberal up bringing. I know..all the polar bears are drowning and al gore is a god. Now, did you try what I suggeated ? Didn't think so. Eat all the ice cream you want, you can't get brain freeze. You mouth and brain arn't connected.

I detect a little anger & hostility there, Kenley :laughing9: May I ask what all of the political badgering is about? I don't know your politics, nor do you know mine. Besides, what in the world does any of that have to do with the discussion at hand?? Could it be a way to get off the subject since you are clearly not able to defend this black-magic, fairy tale hocus pocus you call dowsing??? :spam4:

Science/black magic/global warming. At least I tried it. It works. I'm not hostil, I just can't stand a closed mind...no mater how small. You remind me of a drunk...which I can't stand either. And I don't have one tooth. I don't have any. A grenade blast got most of them and jungle infection got the rest. Now go try my black magic and get back to me.

Just try it........It's only kinky the first time. Try It. What' so hard about proving us wrong? Buch of garlics.

I have used L rods made from coat hangers to locate unmarked graves in the local cemetery. Most every place the rods crossed, another fellow ran a probe into the ground and vindicated the L rods findings. There is something to it. I once located water using pliers but that was a one time thing and I was never able to do it again.

I think the shovel idea is a great one. However, once the "skeptic" is blindfolded, the "friend" should put down a rake instead of a shovel. This way, the rods may not cross, but, the skeptics eyes certainly will!! ;D

Just for the record, I have tried dowsing in my own yard and knowing where the water line is located. I used brass rods bent into an "L" with the short ends set in a couple of glass soda bottles. Walking slowly with my eyes honestly shut, the rods did seem to mysteriously cross on their own, however, at no time did they cross over the water line and the points they did cross were not repeatable. As a result, I have to remain the skeptic and will rely on my proven metal detector for locating (although, it doesn't work very well for finding water). Yes, there are probably many dowsers that have pointed to water with some degree of success, but, as is often heard, "Even a blind hog finds an acorn once-in-a-while."

Note that I have no problem with those that believe in the method, if it works for you....go for it. Color me a 'doubter.'
