Metal Detecting
Hello everyone:

Call me Les.

For many years now, I have owned metal detectors. Right now I own four. All my life I have heard about dowsing but I wasn't really familiar with it from personal experience. In fact, I was somewhat of a skeptic about it.

A couple of years ago I was talking with my Rancher Cousin in southern Utah. He told me he had dowsed for water for his ranch. He told the driller where to drill and that they would hit water at about 70 feet. They hit moisture at 70’ and full flowing water at 90’. That was almost 20 years ago and that well is still flowing water today.

He explained it with such conviction and certainty that I became curious about dowsing. So I bought a couple of brass rods from the hardware store and made some dowsing rods. After all, the water tasted good too and I needed to find out for myself.

To my utmost astonishment and surprise, when my rods crossed, I found a metal target in the ground. I continued dowsing and found all kinds of things. Most were trash items with a few coins along the way. However, the undeniable change dowsing brought was the speed to an unseen target. Using only my metal detector, in most cases it would have taken and extremely long time to finally get the coil over the target, if indeed I happen to do that.

I have dowsed over 300 times now and have had phenomenal success in finding targets.

I first dowse to a target then when my rods cross, I pinpoint it with my metal detector. What I am saying is you really should try it for yourself to see how it works for you. Like myself, it could get you to targets much faster than trying to overlap a detector coil over a large area so as not to miss anything. Dowsing is simply another tool you can use.

Now, there are skeptics who will challenge you along the way and that's OK. Just remember, you would be doing it for yourself and no one else.

Below is a picture of my latest find that I found in my back yard. It's a 27” L X ½” D piece of scrap main power electrical line. It was about 45’ from where I started dowsing and about 1” deep in the ground. This find, being aluminum, in and of itself is not worth much, but like all other finds while dowsing, it is very significant in that it was found while I was dowsing.

I will be posting other finds as time goes on.

Hey! I just noticed there is a whole seperate forum for "dowsing" or "dousing" or whatever you call using "L" rods with which to find things.........maybe this should move to there, ya think? ;D

Just another FYI, I, too, retired from the phone factory (SBC, Inc. / AT&T) spending most of my time in the cable repair division. I did a LOT of locating, but, we always used a transmitter connected to the cable to be located and inductive receiver to find a buried cable. With so many utilities, i.e. water, electricity, cable tv, phone, fiber optics, etc., using the same utility easements with sometimes little spacing between or one above the other, I just don't see how anyone could locate, with enough reliable precision, by dowsing, to avoid digging accidents. With the equipment SBC used, we could locate vertically within an 18" width (usually a lot closer, but, that was the "hand dig" range) and give a very good estimate of depth. As a direct result of my experience, no offense intended toward anyone, I have to remain skeptical.
Hey Roland,
I noticed you are from Texas as well.
Was most of your work done in an urban setting?
Alltel's territory was all boondocks around lake whitney and such.
No disrespect taken but construction gangs didnt usually require depth. They just marked the cable with flags.
If depth was required then obviously that would require more technology and more would be used.
Again, no disrespect but it is what it is. That's how it was done. period.

There was some locating done in the city of Tyler, but, most of what I did was between Mineola and Tyler.......a lot of what you refer to as "boondocks." Even though this locating was done in a non-urban area, there is still an abundance of gas lines, power, cable, fiber, water, etc. anywhere you go. We did most of our own locating, until some of my later years when the company started using outside contractors because they were "less expensive." These folks had to carry some very high dollar insurance policies to be hired because of the tremendous liabilities. SWR is spot on in that regard. I can only say that I have never seen a professional locator using a pair of rods.....but, I would love to see it proven to me! I have to remain a skeptic until then.

Hi Ro,
ANYWHERE? Gas , water, etc. EVERYWHERE?
Obviously not the same boondocks I am referring to.
I honestly dont have an agenda here and I wont type my boon-dock family's telephone company credentials, but...
this whole thing inspired me to call my second oldest brother who also has worked in the phone industry for 30 plus years and he is really laughing at the naysayers. Your not from Texas originally? Just curious.

Bottom line is dowsing rods DO work, plumbers use them all the time to find water lines. One of my very good friends owns a Plumbing Company (Expert Plumbing) and regularly uses dowsing rods to find water/water lines. You can pick them up at any Plumbing supply warehouse.....Now as far as finding metal and relics....that's another thing, never tried it for that.

Yep,I cant speak for "treasure",but I dowse water lines dang near everyday and am seldom off by much!!

Why post a dowsing find here..
Real simple..the skeptics dared him to...they needed another forum for their skepticism..Most Dowsers stay in our forum to discuss our hobby...All people who are interested in Dowsing are welcome...And yes..I will use any and all methods to locate and recover treasure..Art

:icon_scratch: :icon_scratch: :icon_scratch:Hey! Les isn't trying to sell us LRL for $7,000 to $12,000. He is just saying he is using Brass rods that maybe cost a whole $3.00. If it works for him so be it ! :dontknow:

Headlines: A dowser gets doused. Better than getting soused.

Now, one of you call the other one a racist and let's end the argument. Just like they do in politics. But for this one, one point for offense, one point for defense, and all those who believe raise their right hand, those that don't raise their left. :headbang: Now, let's go home, kiss our better half, and try to get along. And maybe sign up for charm school.

dougf: In your post #64 you talk about the $1,000,000 Randi challenge. You point out that "The demonstration has to be designed to eliminate any possible ideomotor effect."

My personal opinion is the ideomotor factor is key and essential for dowsing to work. Take away the ideomotor factor, dowsing would not work any more than an Electronic Metal Detector would work with the power switch in the OFF position. Ever tried detecting with the switch in the OFF position? Doesn't work at all.

That's why he doesn't put his money where a dowser is dictating ALL the rules. By controlling just that one key factor, and he must, he wins every time. Otherwise, he would have to pay up. Simple as magic.

See my post #47.

This is my last post on this topic as I have satisfied my personal curiosity by making several phone calls last night to guys that still work for the company, or have retired from the company, all of whom were in the field with my brother.
This is for the one who I have noticed by perusing this web site has made this issue his own personal crusade and who has tried to make it personal with me.
Is this stuff company policy? Is it in their training manual? Of course not. We are not quite as stupid as you type.
The fact is while they all had VERY ACCURATE Dynatel and Cablehound locators in their trucks, they ALL used ground rods or marker flag staffs from time to time. True that it will also pick up water and gas lines, etc. so couldnt be used in all situations.
I also heard that if you don't believe it works, you have never tried it or there is something physically or spiritually WRONG WITH YOU. (you might check the latter).
So, while obviously not company policy, if a company employee applies the method, then quite obviously it is being done by the company.

And most assuredly!
Please Roland, accept my most humble of apologies.
That was way over the line on my part my friend.

hpd, you're funny and right on as your posts usually are, and you can quit your day job any time! For all of us, this has been an interesting run --- now let's get outside and see what we dig up! Andi

All of you dowsing people are living in la-la land  Dowsing CANNOT find anything!!! Yes, some folks will come across water, coins & a multitude of other items when dowsing. However, NOT because dowsing works. Rather, because if anyone goes around digging enough holes, sooner or later you're going to find something :sign13:

If dowsing was true, why don't all of you believers just quit your jobs, walk around with a coat hanger all day & get filthy rich? :laughing9: :laughing7:

Why don't all metal detectorists quit their jobs, walk around with a detector all day & get filthy rich? According to your posts, you believe they are superior to dowsing, so people should make TONS of money with them, right?

ninydigger: You say: If anyone goes around digging enough holes, sooner or later you're going to find something.

That's true. So why even have Metal Detectors of any kind, make, or design in the first place?

Folks: As promised, here is a picture of what I found today while dowsing. One rusty staple, one rusty nail, one rusty bent rod, and one shinny spent .38 Caliber Shell. The people who own the property sure like their place cleaned up. Good PR you know. Makes it easier for them in many ways and especially gives them reason to be curious and very friendly and to have an opened mind too.

Enjoy the thought I found them while dowsing.

Along with this, I was able to show my friend how I dowse. He was impressed and wants to do more of it next Tuesday. If the weather is good again, I'll be there.

good evening Ladies and gentlemen: This was posted in the dowsing section, to date none of the sceptics, especially swr, has answered it. On the contrary, they all acted as if it was a hot potatoe, yet it was what they asked for, scientific proof, backed by the Bermudian gov't???
******************

G'morning tinpan my very good friend and swr: May I suggest that you rerview the following backed by official government documents. It is just one of many reports but will do for now.

----> http://calteches.library.caltech.edu/655/2/Books.pdf

And especially -->Roberts, Kenneth. Henry Gross and His Dowsing Rod.
Garden City, N.Y., Doubleday, 1951.
Hardcover in Dust Jacket. (tan cloth w/ black and gilt titles)
reprinted several times.
The story of Henry Gross as told by Kenneth Roberts, who first encountered him in 1947 in Kennebukport, Maine, where Roberts lived on his farm which was being threatened by a huge forest fire. Later Roberts was instrumental in helping Gross develop his skill and to bring it to the attention of scientists.

' In 1949 the island of Bermuda, which traditionally relied upon roof top rainwater catch-basins, was hit by the worst drought in four decades. Even though hydrologists declared that there was little underground fresh water available, dowser Henry Gross 'map-dowsed' from his home in Maine the general locations of 4 good freshwater sources in Bermuda. Already existent wells had provided little palatable water, being mostly salty or brackish in content. When Gross was summoned to Bermuda, he accurately pinpointed his four locations which in turn were drilled for water. They were completed in 1950, wherein the four wells were able to produce two million gallons of fresh water per day for public consumption'.

Roberts, Kenneth. The Seventh Sense.

Because metal detectors help to find mostly good stuff - by science. Whereas coat hangers, er, dowsing rods find mostly junky stuff - using an object one would normally hang a jacket on :laughing7:

G'evening Ladies, gentlemen:
Regarding swr's remark that "he used a metal locator to finally precisely locate a small object after locating it generally with dowsing, and why didn't he just use a detector to start with", sigh that was a silly statement.

I have a genuine map that truly locates in general where a large amount of holdup money is buried. I have effectively located it within 200 - 300 sq ft with an ancillary device, a map. So I now should start digging up the entire area until I finally find it or miss it by 1/2 an inch, or simply use another device to more closely locate it? The dowsing ability, 'Rods'.

Then after rods have eliminated 99% of the area, concentrate on the crude location with a metal detector

One always uses every tool at their disposal on any job, treasure hunting is no different , unless you wish to handicap yourself foolishly.

p.s. Hi turd recheck your former disbeliefs, welcome to the ones that now know that it esists and works. heheheheheheheheh
