I've avoided my landfill site for the more productive beaches for the past few months.

With my new Surfmaster PI I figured this would be one heck of a hunt...all that Silver just below my F-4's detecting depth.

Well...after 7 rusty nails dug up out of the hardpack I abandoned that idea and got out my trusty F-4. Amazingly there were plenty of signals..I've hit this original Landfill site at least 2 dozen times since the beginning of the year.

I picked up a chunk of what I thought was a lead decorative item, found quite a few of these before. Well at home decided to give it the vinegar cleaning...and Behold...SILVER! Shocked me..in a very pleasant way! :icon_sunny:

There's also a crushed silver dish, I suspect, with a solid leg/stand which I'm cleaning right now.

Gotta LOVE this hobby.

Is that little wing portion marked in any way?

Yes, the reverse has "STERLING" and some other unreadable markings.

Unfortunately all the Silver from this site comes very corroded. It's close to salt water marshes and quite acidic soil. I found 2 mercs that were just horrible, sadly.

I was about to say, your silver looks like it's been put through the wringer! Nice finds, but sorry about the crappy soil.... Does anything grow there?

Nice piece of silver, i think the relic is damaged by heat. May be long ago someone burnt the dump???

Removal of the corrosion contributes to the deterioration. There's no evidence of burning. The site dates back to early 1950's and I have found pieces of newspaper dated (and unburned). Most coins are 1940's through 1950's with a few wheats on the surface. I've found a 1939 NY World's Fair pin as well as a gold bracelet half inscribed with a 1918 date.

I've spoken to a man walking his dog through there and he relayed how he found a small bag sticking up from the soil. He tugged on the bag and saw it contained about a dozen buffalo nickles. He said he sold one of them for more than $50 but most were very worn. Lucky for me he doesn't metal detect with a machine.

These are two photos of the site to show that there are a few plants on the perimeter. The main portion is bare soil. This place is about 3/4 miles from home and always fun to visit as I have never come home empty handed.
