Silver Bits & Relics

Tides and temperatures finally allowed me out for a dig this morning :hello2:
dug a lot of targets in 4 hours, working on clearing junk from this site to get at the goodies,
first was a 22" oval rope pattern picture frame,
then an ornate brass frame in awesome condition,
antler handle carving knife with silver bolster,
Some type of brass cover with pearls & cabochon
a plain silver bangle bracelet
a handful of coins including an 1882 IH and maybe 1916/18 merc,
Got an pewter plate, holed, but probably quite old,
some ornamental ring with bust,
ashtray marked silver finish 'made in occupied Japan'
lock & cylinder from coin bank, (save your coins and have barrels of money'
Intact harmonica 'hilly billy band' Can't find any info on this :help:
and a match to my other 'Harp ' oarlock.
my largest intact ship spike,
Some pipestems, one 'glasgow' one looks like 'Albert' unreadable other side.
Thanks for looking & HH

Hi Herbie :hello: Very interesting finds, you must've had a lot of fun out there today! :notworthy:

I really love the look of the old brass frame. Is it solid brass or is it "stamped" out? :icon_scratch: Would you mind possibly posting or sending me a photo of the reverse side? What are the dimensions of it . . . it looks 3" x 5"? Any thoughts on age? I think probably 1880 - 1900. :dontknow:

What do you think this second item was?

Sorry to be asking so many questions buddy, they're just very cool relics!

Dave
Thanks for all your replies!
There is plenty left at this site ;D, nonstop signals everywhere :o
Dave, the brass frame would accept a glass 4" X 5-1/2", its construction is interesting,
rolled out in a continuous band, folded & brazed at one corner, then corner ornaments attached. well made & agreed turn of the century design.
about the 'Bust Ring' object, curtain ring, bedpost ornament? :dontknow:
love the male/female design though.
I have a question for you, 4th photo, bottom left, a brass ring with 'wood?' dowel,
found many of these with & without dowels, are they lamp wicks?
Mike, you & your family are always welcome!
good day to all, & HH

Alright Herbie , Can you frame a frame ?? :laughing7: I like the big oval rope frame the best. Though the smaller ornate frame is nothing to turn your nose up at !! The rope frame would be great finds frame with a new backer and a piece of bubble glass !! Great finds all around ! :hello2: :hello2: MaineRelic.
thanks MaineRelic!
The idea of using that frame for a display is Ingenious ! :notworthy:

Re: Silver Bits & Relics

Hi Herbie,

I reference to your question . . . "4th photo, bottom left, a brass ring with 'wood?' dowel, found many of these with & without dowels, are they lamp wicks?"

It looks similar to a whale oil burner, but the wood dowel puzzles me. Most whale oil lamp wicks were either pewter, brass, tin or a combination of the three metals. :icon_scratch:

In other words . . . I have no idea what this it? :dontknow:

Have a good day Herbie, because Saturday you've got more snow coming! :laughing7:

Dave

Re: Silver Bits & Relics

Thanks All!
Dave, just found the wicks on these are not wood, but some porous material that
looks like wood, so I assume whale oil lamp wicks :hello2:
great to have an ID, have found dozens of the brass rings & several with wicks
HH to all :hello:

Thanks Willy!
Gotta keep my chin up when the finds seem to 'Peter' :laughing7: out,
ModernMiner, Your not the only Organ player ;D, I LOVE those spoons the man is playing, nice Coin Silver.
I sat for a few minutes trying to come up with a header after spending a couple hunts with nothing worthy of posting, I was entirely pleased with the finds from this dig, but still in the funk of 2 days of clad and plumbing fixtures. :P
Snow on Saturday, No problem, gonna be hitting it hard today & Tomorrow,
last of the negative low tides for the month, couple inches won't bother me.
(that's what she says :laughing9:)
Thanks & great digs to You All!
