How did you clean them?

With water and baking soda. I tried alum. foil and water but it kept leaking

Leaking? Just wet the coin a bit and wrap it tightly in the foil...there's really nothing to leak. It may clean up the remaining areas on your silver coins.

It's in foil now. The others are in ketchup, cleaning up nicely. We are going back there on Sunday afternoon .hope to help my find some too.

Deb, you only wanna keep them in the foil for a couple minutes...the coin will get warm as the foil is working and you are pressing the foil down tightly on the coin. The reaction may even eat through the foil a couple times. If it's working it will smell like rotten eggs when you unwrap the coin. Wash it off with dish soap and repeat process. No need to leave coin in the foil more than a couple minutes! I should have explained this before.

YIKES what a nice haul! WTG! :occasion14:

Hi Deb!

Looks like they are starting to clean up real well. I'd put those nickels back in the ketchup and change it out as soon as it gets dark in color (brownish). Try a bit more aluminum foil on the silver dollars until it stops smelling like rotten eggs. Then go to the baking soda and water slurry. You can use your fingers or a toothbrush. You can also try some toothpaste and a toothbrush if the crud won't off.

I voted BANNER on your find. Hopefully others will follow suit as this is one of the better caches of coins found on US soil that I've seen posted here.

Best, Erik

Drop one of the nickels in Worcheshire sauce overnight and it will make the nickle more readable. I think it works better than catsup.

I figure if I posted some of your luck would rub off on me.....Nice finds...

Wow. I feel lucky. We did buy lottery tickets after we found these. Nothin....but who cares. I know there are more ,,were going tomorrow after hitting the beach and a ball field close to it.
