Hello All,

Vp here, I headed out to one of my favorite sites, the old Colonial Road. I saw Mrs. land owner on the way in and stopped and talked a bit. They had just plowed the fields I normally detect and I wanted to make sure it was ok to be on the land. She said they also just fertilized so it wouldn't be a good idea but i was more than welcome to detect the land that wasn't plowed yet, she pointed out a few fields. I thanked her and went on my way.

Now I hunted for about an hour finding very little when all of the sudden out in the very middle of the field, hundreds of yards from anything, I got a nice dime sound on my SE. I of course dug it and much to my surprise out popped a mercury dime, i thought OK this is cool, weird but cool ... here i am in the middle of a colonial site and i got a mercury dime ???? No problem i will take it !

I focused on this area and about 5 minutes later got a perfect 00 29 sound, I dug it and out came a 1935 washington quarter! ... now grinning ear to ear i continued to detect ... a little later another dime sound that was kinda 'iffy came along, i dug the dirt out and the sound got much better, i'm thinking ok maybe another dime ? boy was i wrong ... i found the silver disc in the hole with my probe, grabbed it quick and as soon as i did, thought much too thin for a dime ... i got super excited 'cause i knew EXACTLY what i had ... a 1/2 REALE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MY VERY FIRST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so after yelling and jumping a bit :) I calmed myself down and continued on - i started digging anything that even gave a whisper of being a coin ... i dug a few piece of can slaw and then about 10 minutes later got a weird tone, jumping back and forth all over the place ... i dug it and as soon as i got some dirt out of the hole, the signal turned to a 00 29 - a quarter, i frantically searched the hole and pulled a standing liberty quarter !!!!!!!! i re-checked the dirt pile and pulled a jefferson nickel (not shown)

the SLQ is again another first !!!!!!

pumped up now, the dirt started flying i dug EVERYTHING - coin sound or not .... i dug it !
after about 35 minutes with nothign else to show, i was about ready to pack it in and start the long walk back to the car (this site is HUGE) suddenly i got an on/off signal that was deep, it read 00 29 and then when i went back over it, nothing ... again very strange
i dug and dug - got frustrated at one point and and threw all the dirt back in the hole and then decided better of it and redug it all back out, long story short - i pulled this 1920-D walking liberty half dollar from about 10+ inches !!!!

my 3rd FIRST of the day !!!!!!!!!!!

whew - i was P U M P E D, it's three hours later and i am STILL PUMPED UP HERE !!!! i tried Paco about a hudnred times at work and never did get him

now the moral of the story here is that not everything has a rhyme or reason to it, i was out in the middle of this field, not a single thing around except corn stalks, no iron signals, no pottery ... soooo why all the coins there ? the reale was obviously from the colonial road but all the other ones ??? very weird !

also i found the kids gun on the way back to the car, the other item in the picture is a large piece of lead (very heavy) that i found the other day in a field close to this one, after talking with Paco, we feel it might have been carried by a colonial person and used to make his lead musketballs - i really can't think of a reason Mr. Farmer would have had it out in the field ... any experts care to comment on this item ?

Thanks for looking (and sorry for the long story !)

Outstanding!!

A day we all dream about.

Are you sure that is a toy gun? Looks like a very solid frame to me.

Congratulations!

Those are great finds VP!

...It might NOT be a child's toy gun.... could be a derringer of some manufacture?

Kevin, how about a close-up of the half real? What is the date?

Kevin, as much as you continue to say the coins are from the road, they probably aren't. There were log dwellings up and down that area, so the Colonial-era coins are most likely being found at these dwellings. The newer silver were probably from a farmer.

It looks like my research produces yet another Spanish silver for the year! :D

Way to go, dude, on that recovery!

hey kyle,

thanks for posting, no actually my research did show a colonial road going thru the area, i found a copy of a map that confirmed it, ya see it was actually an indian trail before it was used by the colonials to travel between Fort Antes and Fort Horn (down a few miles on the south side of the river) i've also found many writings that refernce this route

now the reale was probably from the road, obviously the others weren't

also, there were several homesteads on this site by both the orginal settlers and squatters afetr the "big runaway", along with several 1800's homesteads some are shown on the atlas and some aren't - the largest homestead on this site was the first one we explored as a group - the one that you misidentified as the tavern (remember the research i showed you that cleared all that up ?)

thanks for the original research, but please, it has been all my persistence and patience that has made these finds - i told you guys many times there were many more incredible things to be found here - after we split as a group, i started finding them and if i do remember correctly - you guys gave up on this site long ago - remember ???????????????

anyway you are more than welcome on this site and the new one Paco and I got permission for but please, give credit to where credit is due

Persistance and Patience - that's the "John Walter" way

take care,

kevin

Kevin....HOLY CRAP brother! That is one amazing day. I'm sure you will find many more goodies at your site.

WTG Kevin

Kevin, if it weren't for me putting you on that spot, you wouldn't be finding ANYTHING.

I just don't want you going to the "Park" site that my uncle and I got permission for a few years ago. We would like to keep some back-up sites for ourselves.

Yeah, there was a road that went through there, but that doesn't mean the coins were all dropped on the road. Every Colonial coin off that property was found in areas of very small iron patches, signifying an early dwelling or structure. There are handfuls of small homesteads on that farm, which you haven't been able to realize yet.

A spectacular day! I'm tempted to drive over there and jump everyone's claims ;D (just kidding).

Nice finds and congrats. Every time I see the word "colonial" in the headline I read that post first. It seems there are a lot of those types of headlines in this forum. Maybe that's because you guys are finally thawing out from the winter.

No need to argue. Who cares who's research it was. You spent the time to hunt the spot and you found some awesome coins. That's all that matters at the end of the day.

Man what a day you had,3 firsts,a big load of silver and a great day in a farm field. It does'nt get much better.Congrats!!!

The pure excitement of unearthing old silver coins is why metal detecting is the greatest hobby in the world! Great finds, congrats!

I would appreciate it if you would stay away from my other properties, though. Since I won't be hitting your spots, I don't want you hitting my other ones.

As you already stated, enough said, Kevin!
