I hope someone can tell you what it is exactly, as I found something similar in shape and theme. (Mine is only about the size of a US nickel.) On mine, you can see the word sterling under the image of Mary and Jesus..

They are the front half of catholic lockets. The rear half would have had the bail. You can clearly see the hinge.
