Silver? I can't tell...

Went out today... It's been a while since I found anything good... I think I might of found a few keepers.... Check them out...


I hunted in an old spot that has been hunted to death... And if you hunt the spots that you'd expect to find some things you just won't.... BUT I found out a little secret...

I hunted this park area that dates back into the 40's maybe earlier... Anyway the place is literally hunted out, except I tried one more time with some descent results... I only had an hour to hunt so I started hunting this park... Around this one acre park is a dirt road full of rocks and is packed so hard a pick would break digging into it... and because of that reason I figured no one would of hunted it, at least very few would attempt it... And I was right... Coins started coming out of it and yes they were very hard to get out of the road! within a few minutes I found a ring! It looks silver! Which is kinda true.... It actually says 10k gold filled sterling... Which I'm not sure what that is.... Is it gold or is it silver? How do you put a value on that?

Also I found a very very crusty Washington quarter... It sounds silver it has a chip in the dirt and looks silver but I am not sure because there's so much dirt on it I cannot tell because of all the dirt and as I type about it, it is in my electrolysis set up trying to get the dirt and grime off of it... I'll let you know how that turned out when it comes off.

So in conclusion do not forget about the roads... the dirt roads around the sites you hunt... people get in out of their cars and they lose things!

Well it's barely readable but it looks like a 1937 Washington quarter... Mint mark

Yeah it looks even worse now... You can see an obvious 7 but the 3 is very hard to tell... It sound like silver so it's a 37, 47, or 57 for sure

Thanks... But be warned its very hard to dig... And most likely the things you find will be in bad condition and you are very likely to damage your item trying it get it out of the ground.

I havent pulled any silver out of the ground looking like that yet even the 1905 barber i found came out like new but ive only dug 20 silver coins so far

As for the "gold filled" that's just another word for plated, so its actually silver. Great finds!

I've dug a few more than that and it seems that coins found in road ways come out is far worse shape because of the chemicals used in roads... The stuff that leaks from our cars... And further back horse and mule urine... Think about that... Look at what we put our coins through to clean them, from a few seconds to a few days... These coins have been in the ground under chemicals bombardment for years!!!

Hmmmm hard to tell. Any signs of a mint mark? If its pre 65 then the mm will be on the reverse under the eagle. 65+ is on obverse. Since its toast anyway. Maybe just get a silver test kit and throw a drop on it. Does the edge show any signs of copper? Could always take some sandpaper to the edge since its already rough.

good idea on the mint mark but the mint mark is harder to read than the date... its not looking good though... Its looking like it might be clad... I made the mistake of using a copper electrode in my electrolysis and not its got a copper plating... I may just have to cut it in half! the edges are too corroded and with the copper plating it all looks copper LOL

now that I have reviewed this thread... and looked at the pictures I notice they hall have a green color to them... that is probably coming from the copper in the quarter... so I am leaning towards it being a clad quarter... I have NEVER had a silver coin not come clean like this one... I have had it on at least 6 hours of electrolysis... and it still loos bad... so I am pretty sure its a clad quarter now.

Put a flat file to the edge of it and see whats in the heart. I'm leaning towards it being clad, but it's hard to tell. If you plated it with the copper from the electrolisys, you have the wires backwards. Ions should FROM the coin to the other.

I think I got it the right way the positive side/red has way more stuff on it then the negative/black side besides only the negative side bubbles. but good idea...

ok I have scrubbed, buffed ground, shocked pounded and slammed this quarter on the ground just to find out what it is... I scanned it on my detector and it reads at 80+VDI a clad quarter reads at 82+ and a silver quarter at 84+ so in conclusion I think I have a very trashed roasted toasty buffed ground shocked pounded and slammed clad quarter looks like a date of 1971 or 7. I filed the side a bit and it looks all copper there... so in sad conclusion its not silver.
