My number assigned to this new place is 228, the one where I got 3 old coins on St Patricks Day. I went back there this morning and just like on Monday, first target was a large Colonial button (30mm) but this one turned out to be a nice plain design Tombac type. Next to the Tombac almost in the same hole I got my first coin, within a few minutes I had two more for a total of 3 in the immediate area (all within a 20 foot radius, including Monday's coins).

I was satisfied with what I had found already, although a bit disturbed that all 3 coins were not recognizable thru the dirt, which is usually not a good sign and since the first coins found there were not that great I was not getting my hopes up for being to identify the coins. But, I decided to quit while I was ahead. :)

As I was walking slowly back to my truck, I got the 1917 Wheatie by a little waterway. I figured that was it for the day. I had about two block walk back to my truck so I zigzagged thru the woods and hunted as I was heading back, since I already have gotten a KGII and a KGI in these woods in the past several months. I was rewarded with my last diggable signal of the day.

I had the Minelab smaller 8 inch coil on today and I knew that the 1 inch or more depth loss might hurt me, since all coins are relatively deep here, but I got a reading that only thru years of seeing this type of erratic hit before that it could be a deep coin. The depth indicator was maxed out, so I dug a very big plug and that I started carefully using the SR Probe in the hole, and the coin was down further than the normal 4-7 inches. I kept removing dirt and finally the probe really indicated I was on top of the coin at 10+ inches! For the 8 inch coil to hit on that large copper at such a depth was very satisfying to me, I prefer using the 8 inch coil for the less weight and the maneuverability in thick brush. That coin was heavily encrusted in dirt on both sides and I gave little hope of IDing that one also, but thankfully, it had more than enough detail left to ID it as a 1734 KGII Halfpenny.

So, I have gotten 7 coins (not counting the Wheatie) this week at that site, and there just are not too many left anymore like that.
Time to go find a spot where the coins come out of the Jersey sandy soil in great shape. There are times when I would rather get one beautiful copper than 3 or 4 toasted ones.

Hard to believe but I still do not have a Large Cent this year. I believe I had six last year at this time, but I am getting more colonial era coins and relics this year so far.

Added one photo of my nemisis. GREEN BRIAR, think this closeup shows why I wear protective pants nowdays. ::)

That 8" coil surprises me too...I know it can go deeeeeep!!

Don't worry. I don't have a large cent either this year, but I don't expect to find one in my neck of the woods. :icon_scratch:

Great finds, Don!

That half cent is a beauty Don. That site has been good to you. I liked the pictures of the site and of the coins in the hole. Made me feel like I was there. Keep up the good work.

Don, congrats on 4 more coppas from that site. You are on your way to your best year EVER!

I love the 1805 Draped Bust half cent!

Keep the fever high, Don!

Don, your finds just keep COMING and COMING!!! Those are some beautiful coppers. That is probably one of the best one day takes that I have seen for colonial coppers. Great job bud!!!!! :o

Great digging Don!
My crystal ball tells me there are large cents in your very near future. I'm hoping to find one soon too.

You actually found a nail? Sweet! :D What are the other two round discs next to the uncleaned coins? I would never give that site up, slightly crusty or not there are some great coins coming out of there. :o I can't imagine pulling coins that old. Isn't that where you got the suspender eagle?

Nice job on the clean up Don!

LOL, the nail was weird, I showed it for my own future reference, it read way too high for an old square nail, thought for sure it was a shotgun casing or button, but no a nail, and a small one at that.
This is not the heart/Eagle site, this is new, only found it on St Pattys day.
The round discs? Yes, that is what they are, lead type round objects, will look closely at them later. I also, not pictured found a 8 inch long thick piece of lead, it was about equivalent to a regular horseshoe in thickness and size and shape, that is what I thought it was when first dug.

That's a sweet half cent and the KGII isn't bad either! :icon_king:
